Healthcare is certainly one of its issues for many Americans, however, that alone doesn’t equate to make it a terrible place. I would go out on a limb here and say a lot of Canadians don’t fully understand the healthcare system down there except the bits they read, and those are never positive pieces being reported.
Healthcare in Canada isn’t free, we are heavily taxed up here, I’ve wrote this before, depending on where you live, if you earned 90K dollars in both BC or Arizona you’re going to pay roughly 13,000 dollars less taxes in AZ, state and federal vs federal and provincial. There’s $1000 dollars a month you could spend on healthcare to get the same standard of healthcare we get here but many choose not to. - LeftCoaster
America is great if you have money. Lots of beautiful places to see . They have a healthcare issue a gun issue , pollution issue is some major cities.
I am perfectly happy to be Canadian and I could easily list about 15 other countries I would chose to live over USA.

I think Ferland will play again, for a while anyway, so not really a candidate. Here’s the thing I don’t get...
They don’t really get a salary advantage by owning those players. Horton/Clarkson count against the $81.5m and then get moved to LTIR allowing the Leafs to go beyond the hard cap. The only advantage it creates for them is that they earn extra draft picks or whatnot for shelling out the $. - 1970vintage
It helps them maneuver salary. I didn't fully understand all of it.
I would love if Ferland only played in playoffs and was injured all year.
|
|
|

They spent over a 110 mil in salary this year . Don't think other teams didn't take notice. I liked the way Jim used LTIR this year he was able to get Toffoli in even though we had cap problems .
I hope we keep Ferland it gives the team flexibility . We spent close to 3 mil over the cap maybe more. - VANTEL
Seems the leafs are resigned to letting Barrie walk. I still think JB sniffs around him, he was way to hot and heavy on him when he was in COL. The big question is what gives?

I heard an interesting take about a month ago. US can not afford to not give people who can't afford access to health care .
If they don't have access then they will spread the disease or the next major pandemic to extreme levels. |

Getting as close to the upper limit as possible means you can replace the full value of those contracts going to LTIR. Example: if the Canucks were at say $80m out of the $81.5m cap, including Spooner, Luongo etc, and Lui gets hurt, the team would be allowed to go over the salary cap by $4.5m (Lui’s $6 - $1.5 that they were below the cap) for the period that he is injured.
The leafs took on Horton/Clarkson specifically because they knew that those players would not recover (no risk that they would have to fit them into the lineup) and they were compensated (in draft picks) for it. Should the Canucks have been in that market? Probably, but can’t blame the owner for not wanting to pay millions of dollars for no performance... |

It is going to be interesting what the new contracts look like. You can't sign 7 mil dollar players to fan less arenas or a league that is bleeding money.
I honestly would not mind looking at a Dillon Barrie pairing if you could do it for a combined 7 mil

Why are they so opposed to universal health care? They just don’t like to be “told” I think. |

Wouldn't that be something! It would never happen with those #'s though. I do like both players. |

But that extra tax you are paying gives the minimum wage employees that you rely on in your everyday life healthcare. Generally in Canada we are good with it, seeing it as a benefit to all. Though some greedy people may hate it, they are generally not going to speak against it, else people will hate them. In the US, try telling someone making 90k that they will be taxed more so that someone making 20k will also get health benefits. How many will accept it, and how many will react poorly to it? |

I didn't blame FA one bit for not going down that road.
Leafs also gave up a first round pick to trade Marleau. He maybe heading back to TO. His wife had a Tweet She misses her back yard rink with the big Maple Leaf logo |

Of course you can, and I agree, the US lost their way some time ago, however, there’s still pockets of great places and people. I just like to say stuff for dramatic effect.
In all seriousness though, Canada is no better, we’re losing our way in that we pander to the loudest groups, even if they’re the smallest, and give them what they want at the expense of the rest of our hard working population.
Canada has always been an export country, the things that built America and Canada into such great nations are slowly disappearing. Our resources and manufacturing are dying a slow death, the foundation of our beginnings. - LeftCoaster
I agree that manufacturing is disappearing, but that's the result of capitalism, no? Highest profit margins. I think what's been missing is the foresight to transition the countries into a post-manufacturing society. Tech, engineering, etc.

Vantel has the pinch right there. It's great if you have money, including the health care system. The problem is most Americans don't, or if they do they scrape by through their job. And with this pandemic, a poop ton of people got laid off and lost their healthcare. Is that a feather in the cap for a great nation? Hell no. My healthcare is subsidized through Obamacare, and that was a tooth and nail fight to get more people healthcare that's constantly being dismantled.
I live in a bubble in New York. It's a crazy ass city with every walk of life and culture and people. But man, if I had money, I would love New York so much more. |

They have one, The Affordable Care ACT (Obama care) but you can opt out of it, unlike here where you can’t opt out of paying your taxes. |

If I wasn’t living in Canada I’d sooner live in Europe than the US. More diversity, access to so many places in close proximity and the historical poop, amaze balls. But I get why family and comfort would be high on some peoples list. I’ve been all over the US and while I like most of the places I’ve visited, the only places I could see myself living are Hawaii or Southern California. |

They had to do that because Marlsey was still going to play. If they sign him again you know it will be the Spezza special. |

Yes but it was a huge fight to get it in, and Trump has been fighting for almost 4 years to dismantle it. So basically, it’s the rich who don’t want to support the poor? |
