Top Gun was pretty good too.....

.... I'll show myself out.

- PatC80

Top gun was a great movie. People are afraid to admit it.
Although Kelly McGillis was never all that hot.

Oh Frank yes!

I maybe get why teenage girls would like it, but it's the stupidest movie ever made.

Close second is Oxford Blues with Ally Sheedy and Rob Lowe. My wife and I actually saw it in the theatre together, but before we were actually dating.

They couldn't cram another obvious cliche plot item into the franking thing.

Oh, and Cocktail!!!!!

Or ten year old boys, when it came out. It really, really doesn't hold up.

Sportsnet ran a "what if" Gretzky signed with the Leafs for the 96/97 season story the other day. It's an interesting question so I dusted off the most state of the art NHL simulator at the time...NHL 97 (the one with John Vanbiesbrouck on the cover) for the SNES (actually a RetroDuo that plays NES and SNES games) and inserted Gretzky into the 96/97 Leafs.

Simulated the season. Results? Dead last in the division. Oddly enough, Bryan McCabe led the NHL with 40 goals.

So I ran a different kind of "what if" scenario. What if the Leafs got to re-do all their 1st and 2nd round picks from 1981 to 1991.

1981
Benning 6th ---> MacInnis 15th.
Yaremchuk 24th ---> Chelios 40th.

1982
Nylund 3rd ---> Stevens 5th.
Leeman 24th ---> Same and trade for Gilmour or just pick Gilmour.
Ihnacak 25th ---> Sandstrom 36th.

1983
Courtnall 7th ---> Neely 9th.
Jackson 28th ---> Zezel 41st.

1984
Iafrate 4th ---> Roberts 12th.
Gill 25th ---> Same.

1985
Clark 1st ---> Same.
Spangler 22nd ---> Nieuwendyk 27th.

1986
Damphousse 6th ---> Same.
But traded for Shanahan

1987
Richardson 7th ---> Sakic 15th.
Marois 28th ---> Desjardins 38th.

1988
Pearson 6th ---> Selanne 10th. (Roenick at 8th or Brind'Amour at 9th)
Domi 27th ---> Same.

1989
Thornton 3rd ---> Guerin 5th.
Pearson 12th ---> Kolzig 19th.

Guerin + Kolzig ---> Sundin.

Bancroft 21st ---> Foote 22nd.

1990
Berehowsky 10th ---> Brodeur 20th.
Potvin 31st ---> Same.

1991
Niedermayer 3rd ---> Same.

So here's how the 1992-1997 Leafs could have looked.

Shanahan / Sakic / Sundin
Clark / Gilmour / Selanne
Roberts / Nieuwendyk / Neely
Sandstrom / Zezel / Domi

Stevens / Chelios
Niedermayer / MacInnis
Foote / Desjardins
Gill

Brodeur
Potvin

Simulated the entire season 96/97 season and this time the Leafs finished 1st in the Division, 3rd overall.

Awards:

Presidents Trophy: Flyers
Vezina: Cujo
Jennings: Hextall
Norris: Desjardins

All realistic scenarios in 1996/1997. Then poop got weird.

Art Ross: Renberg
Selke: Renberg

Yes, THE Mikael Renberg.

But wait...there's more!

Lester B. Pearson: Janney
Hart: Janney

Yes, THE Craig Janney.

He had 79 points (12th overall) but he was double MVP.

On to the playoffs. Simulated every game except elimination games.

1st round: Phoenix: 4-0.
2nd round: Colorado: 4-0.
3rd round: Dallas: 4-3. Game 7 OT GWG: Roberts.
Final: Florida: 4-0. Cup winning goal at Maple Leaf Gardens: Clark.

One last award...

Conn Smythe: Svehla

Yes, THE Robert Svehla.

But Leafs win!

- JohnFergusonJr

This is great.

I've often looked on the draft history on hockeydb at what the Leafs should have picked every year, but never put together a team.

Take the rest of the day off, JFJ. You've done well here.

Good Morning bored Leafies.

Starting a new bracket today. This is actors who have played Superheroes / X-men / Comic book characters etc.

We're voting for how hot the actor is, NOT the character. I won't always post pics of the character. Some of the women have even played more than one such role.

The bracket has been set, 32 female actors.

First Matchup... A or B

- Aetherial

This bracket is going to be a clash of the titans.

Gotta go A on this one. Sorry Anna.

Don't be confused... there are a number of Midway movies.

This specific one is Dauntless: The Battle of Midway and it was 2019.

OMG I am remembering parts of it now... ROFL! it is so bad.

- Aetherial

1976 Midway is fantastic.

One of the best casts of all time.

FFS, Heston, Fonda, Coburn, Holbrook, Robert Mitchum, Rober Wagner, Pat mother-franking Morita, Dabney franking Coleman, Erik mother-franking Estrada, Tom Selleck without a moustache, what more do you frankers want?

It's absolute poop (but you are right about Kelly McGillis).

If you want to watch 1980s jingo-istic American bullpoop, pop Red Dawn into the VCR.

It's bad, but damn, it's good.

I'm not looking forward to Kilmer playing volleyball topless on the beach this time.

Hot Shots was a great movie.

And if there was any justice in the world, Charlie Sheen should have taken Tom Cruise's career path after Platoon and Tom Cruise should have been relegated to slapstick comedy and sitcoms after the horrible Top Gun movie.

I guess it was only a matter of time before they tried to empty the pockets of that corpse.

It should just be drone pilots bombing Afgahni weddings and then driving home and killing their wives and themselves.

Am I the only grumpy old man who is franking tired of these comic book movies?

I liked Guardians of the Galaxy - hell, I loved it. I really did, although they could cut out the entire bit about the Collector. Still haven't seen the sequel.

Iron Man was OK. I think I liked one of the sequels, and the other was poop.

The Avengers movie with the giant space centipedes was about the stupidest franking movie I have ever seen.

The X-men poop is boring.

FFS, can't Hollywood have an original franking idea?

You forgot:

Lawrence of Arabia
A Bridge Too Far
Dambusters
Maybe Platoon
And I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but Saving Private Ryan. Franking Spielberg ruined the movie at the end with the cheeseball weepy scene, but other than that, damn it was good.

Apocalypse Now is very, very over-rated.

Apocalypse now is a godamn fantastic movie. But it's set during the Vietnam war, it's not about the Vietnam war.

Funny that there are so few good ones these days. If anybody says Hurt Locker, watch it again and realize it's one of the pooptiest movies ever made and the sniper scene is the most pathetic garbage I've ever seen in my life. AND I WATCHED CHIPS!

My favourite Shwarzenegger film is Kindergarten Cop, because damn, it really is the best movie ever made to describe America.

It's the heartwarming story of how a tough, gruff cop learns to find his gentler side by having to look after a bunch of young kids. It allows him to fall in love and find happiness.

Oh, and there's also a fantastic scene where there's a shootout and people die in an elementary school.

Oh man, it's so heartwarming...

Out of the millions of comic book movies to come out in the last 20 years, the Christopher Nolan batman movies were good, the first X-men was good, and the first Antman was good... and that's pretty much it.

Actually, watched Shazam the other day, it was pretty good.
