Although he was never an elite goal scorer, There was a time that he was an elite playmaker. Man, especially early on. Remember those feeds? Damn. Giroux was never given an elite scorer, let alone a very good one, on his wing. We saw what happened when he was even given a past his prime Jagr. That was pretty fun. Playing with Coors sure brought BOTH of their games up.

The guy’s team was decimated around him. Richards and Carter leaving may have thrust him up on the top line fast, but can you imagine what might have happened if they had kept, say, Jeff Carter? Those two one a line together for years could have been deadly.

Not his fault. Can’t hold it against him. And yet despite playing during a rather bleh period of Flyers hockey, that man is gonna be #2 after the great Bobby Clarke one day for a franchise who has had a whoooole Lott’s great teams over its tenure.

If that's the case, then why aren't Dave Poulin's or Brian Propp's number retired? One led the youngest team in the league to the SCF against arguably the best team ever, and the other is second (or third) in all time team scoring. Seems just as worthy/important as what Giroux's done.

For the record, I'm not dumping on Giroux, and he should be a lock for Flyers HOF. However, jersey retirements should be a highly exclusive group and, IMO, he isn't there right now. Win a Cup and/or some hardware and get 1000+, then he should.

What is amazing is that he still 188 goals to go. At 34 he does have a shot. 38 goals for 5 seasons gets him there. Pretty amazing what Ovi has done in todays game.

No doubt Ovi is probably the best pure goal scorer ever, or at least top 3 with Hull and Bure. But the thing with Gretzky that's amazing is that he was primarily a playmaker. I wonder how many goals he'd have if he was a bit more selfish.

I'd have to put Gretzky on the pure goal scorer list. Getzky has the two highest goals per season numbers and shows up 4 times in the top 10 in most goals in a season. As well as the all time goals leader. I get your point and agree with it about the playmaking but he is also the best goal scorer the NHL has ever seen.

Guys like Dionne Esposito and Jagr should get consideration and I think the next tier includes Kurri, Sakic, Selanne Gartner Mogilny Recchi

What a day!!! I was there (just tells you I'm an old buzzard)! Section O Row 12 Seat 6. Unbelievable atmosphere! I was 17 at the time and had a season ticket (worked a paper route and at Pantry Pride). All the "regulars" were there in their seats - Curly, Jean, Tony, Ed, etc. When Kate came out to sing I thought the roof was going to blow off! ((Again ). The intensity was crazy and my heart rate was "crazy high" throughout the game. I remember going to church at St. Agnes in Almonesson, NJ with my Mom and lighting a candle for the Flyers that morning. I guess God was a Flyers fan that day! When Ricky tipped that shot home from the Moose it was just bedlam. Saw it all the way as it was "down my end" of the ice. Like others, it just gives me chills reliving those moments. When that clock wound down and it was over it was just euphoria!!! Curly and Jean opened a bottle of champagne and there were hugs all around! So we actually had tickets for the Wings lacrosse game that night. Went home to Turnersville and came back with my parents and a friend that night. Euphoria was still running throughout my being. So my friend and I were roaming the corridors during the break. We walked by the Blue Line Club and there were a number of people going down the steps to the club. My "adventurous friend" said "let's go". I said we can't go down there! Somehow he convinced me to do it. We wandered around a bit. The Flyers players were milling around, some eating dinner. Talked with ol' Thundermouth (Joe Watson), can remember my friend patted Moose Dupont on the back and he turned around and looked at him with that “Moose Look”. And then he chatted with us for a minute. We went up to Bobby Clarke while he was eating dinner to ask for his autograph. He didn’t say much but he signed for us. I swear to you there was an article in the paper not long after that where they were interviewing Bobby Clarke and he said the one thing that he liked least was when people kept asking for his autograph while he was eating. So sorry, Mr. Clarke. I do apologize! And sorry this got so long winded! It was and still is such a great day and memory!!!

When I say "pure goal scorer" I mean guy who is primarily ("purely") a goal scorer. Just wording.

A few years back, I did a quick and dirty comparison between Wayne's 92 goal season and Ovi's 65. Accounting for total league goals scored, 30 vs. 24 teams, ans 82 games versus 84, Ovi came out to either 90 or 91. Like I said, it was a quick and dirty analysis.

But as far as "best" goal scorer, it's Gretzky. If he hadn't done what was best for the team, he would probably have well over 1000 goals.
