Looks like the Hawks aren't signing Peeters (no surprise) or Gravel (slight surprise). Maybe they actually will draft Askarov... |

Yeah, agree on both sentiments: no loss with Peeters but also not surprised that Gravel was cut loose.
Nalimov could still be in consideration given he was on a PTO with the Hogs right before the shut down and never got to play.
Assuming the NCAA is permitted to start at some point this coming season, Basse will start his time at Colorado College.
The release of Peeters and Gravel could also be a nod to more confidence in Tomkins and/or Subban as ones to keep developing (in addition to Delia and Lankinen, of course). |

If the 24 team tournament is the way the NHL goes, who dresses as the Blackhawks backup netminder (Subban, Delia, Lankanen)? |

So we get Edmonton.
Four teams in the top seeds get byes and subsequent play remaining four form. the play in series.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Top seeds: Boston Bruins (1), Tampa Bay Lightning (2), Washington Capitals (3), Philadelphia Flyers (4)
Play-in series: Pittsburgh Penguins (5) vs. Montreal Canadiens (12), Carolina Hurricanes (6) vs. New York Rangers (11), New York Islanders (7) vs. Florida Panthers (10), Toronto Maple Leafs (8) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (9)
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Top seeds: St. Louis Blues (1), Colorado Avalanche (2), Vegas Golden Knights (3), Dallas Stars (4)
Play-in series: Edmonton Oilers (5) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (12), Nashville Predators (6) vs. Arizona Coyotes (11), Vancouver Canucks (7) vs. Minnesota Wild (10), Calgary Flames (8) vs. Winnipeg Jets (9)
So far the hawks defeat Edmonton, and IT LOOKS like they become the 8th seed in the real Cup dance...and are in playing St. Louis in the first round.
Is that something to play for?
The Draft - these were the past rules for draft order
The teams that did not qualify for the playoffs the previous season (picks 1– 16 now 1-7)
The teams that made the playoffs in the previous season but did not win either their division in the regular season or play in the Conference Finals (picks 16–23 up to 27)
My thinking is if one of these teams WINS a play-in series, the get moved higher, so the hawks would "probably' get bump up and the teams that lose that play-in, say Edmonton (via Hawks, and the three other losers) and the other four would elect in 8, 9, 10 and 11...
I don't know but makes sense, right?
and then the order follows the rule sin place:
The teams that won their divisions in the previous season but did not play in the Conference Finals (potentially picks 24–27)
The teams that lose in Conference Finals (picks 28 and 29)
The team that was the runner-up in the Stanley Cup Finals (pick 30)
The team that won the Stanley Cup in the previous season (pick 31) |

Gravel and Peeters were not going to get faster better period
Gravel was taken late despite the fact most teams thought he wasn't full of upside to get better, but the hawks took a chance with a late choice, no harm there.
Peeters was a reach...but they swung for the fence.
I guess the criticism gets leveled on that one depending upon what the hawk draft team saw there besides him and felt there was little go get excited about so take the gamble...only l'il Victor Mete has played in the NHL at all, so far. |

As I mentioned before, I think it is always better to part of the playoffs. I know we differ on this Wiz (and you have a much better idea of what is actually available in the draft), but I don't personally see how it would be a bad thing to participate in playoff games.

My guess would be Subban, but Delia was apparently playing quite well when the season stopped. |

Unless it is "bracketed" like the NCAA basketball tourney. In which case, if they beat Edmonton (#5), they assume the Oilers seed and play #4 (Dallas). CSN Chicago seems to think that it will be bracketed.
Should that be the case, they would theoretically get the Blues in the next round after Dallas (#1 vs #4).

I have been watching the reruns of the 13 PO. That line of Shaw, Bickell and Stalberg was a load. They were dangerous on almost every shift. Bickell just hitting anything that moves. I think we forget how well he could move when healthy.
Rozy was a force, still. Oduya was such a perfect fit for what the Hawks were doing in the neutral zone. He would shut down rushes at the opposing blue lines.
Zus was such a smart player. |

I dont care about NCAA but the play-in will decide who fills the bottom four spots in each conference.
I am not proposing anything, just stating that there is no bracket to get one team in...it is an elimination to fill the bottom four slots on each side, so NO NEED TO ELIMINATE any more than four of the 12, right?
then it goes to 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 , and 4 vs 5
I understand what you are saying that slot that EARNED the Oilers the 5th overall slot -eg. translated to " earns them nothing' because now they have to STILL "play-in" to STAY in...but would earn the hawks something (eg.the 5 seed)???
I find that as DOUBTFUL...crap, they let the also rans in but your proposal is offering them a red carpet...I truly doubt the league has this in the works...you think the players on the participating teams would sign off on that too?
with 5 , 6 , 7, and 8 coming from that PLAY IN:
Play-in series: Edmonton Oilers (5) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (12), Nashville Predators (6) vs. Arizona Coyotes (11), Vancouver Canucks (7) vs. Minnesota Wild (10), Calgary Flames (8) vs. Winnipeg Jets (9) [/I]
I am fairly CERTAIN what I have posted IS what is being planned, because on Sirius Radio, they surmising a tough opening series between the Penguins and Canadiens and then were said Pittsburgh would have another tough series against Philly...I guess if they had said Montreal would be playing Philly in the playoffs THAT would be your proof that your proposal was the one they were following... |

That is why the league declared bye for this teams Blues and Stars...they wait to see who from the play-in survives to fill the bottom of the "REAL" play off 8 bracket...
after the novel addition of this play-in, things quickly go back to the normal same old same old way the playoffs are / were set up before it became the CoVid Cup. |

Too bad Stalberg wasn't willing to play like a 3rd line guy all the time. Would've been a real solid piece for the Hawks. He actually could lay some pretty big hits when he wanted to. Pretty big guy and strong on his skates. Just not much inside his head or in his hands. |

I think at 9th Askarov would be a steal Cutting two goalie prospects just exasperates the HAWKS depth .If the HAWKS move up then all bet's are off. |

Cutting two bad goalies doesn't do anything to their depth. All they would have to do is find two more average ones and they are above where they were. |

Especially since it would probably take an eighteen year old goalie 4 or 5 years to even begin to sniff the NHL. Or a commie one to come over, if at all. |
