Ray Bourque trade.

I was 9 and my favorite player was gone, and I thought the Bruins would just be the worst team forever.

Luckily, things worked out for 77 and the B's turned the corner 2005-ish, but at the time it was very traumatic.

I remember that. Red Wings and AVS were both trying to acquire Bourque. I think he had only 4 teams he'd agree to be traded to. Holland wouldn't give up Jiri Fischer. So Bourque was traded to Colorado. Darn AVS got Blake the next year too. Priks. 😂

I think he was traded at the 2000 deadline, but had another year on his contract? Not sure, memory is fuzzy

I think Bourque was playing out the final season of his Bruins contract in 2000 when he was traded to Colorado right before the trade deadline. Then signed a 1 year/$5.5 million deal with the AVS before he was set to become a UFA. I still think it's hilarious the AVS retired his jersey before the Bruins did. 😂

Game 2, 1993 finals. That f8cking curved stick.

I got over it.

You mean that stick that Marty McSorley used to score so many goals that year?

That night of December 95 when Tremblay hung Roy out to dry setting in motion what would lead the once glorious Montreal franchise to the darkest of eras. When he was finally pulled and went back to talk to Corey, 15 year old me knew that was it in Montreal for the player I had idolized since I was 6... Then when the trade was announced, I cried...not because the return was awful (even though it was) but because the man who had allowed the Habs to win their last two cups was off to greener pastures and would go on to win again but wearing another team’s jersey...that broke my heart.

Damn. That was awful. The Great Man played it as well as he could. Love Roy.

That was against Detroit. Tremblay embarrassed Roy by leaving him in goal. Roy got the last laugh against Detroit when he eliminated them in the WCF that season. After Detroit went 62-13-7-131 points.

Easy call for me. The Penguins have had several heartbreaking losses (losing a 3-0 series lead to the Isles in 75, losing in game 5 OT tot the Isles in 82, losing games 6 and 7 to the Flyers in 89, losing game 7 to FLORIDA(!) in 96. But the worst by far was David F’n Volek’s game 7 OT goal in 1993.

Pens pulled the goalie to tie it up in the last minute. I was sure they were going to win in OT. They were so much better than NY on paper. The isles didn’t even have their best player in games 1 - 6.

They were on the verge of becoming a TRUE dynasty with three in a row, cementing their place among the best teams ever and if they had advanced to the final (no sure thing since Roy stood on his head that year) they would have played the LA Kings and we would have gotten to see a Gretzky and Lemieux Stanley Cup final matchup. So disappointing. I was shocked, depressed all summer and bitter for years.

The original expansion in ‘67 to 12 teams when the Habs & Leafs to cheap to split HNIC pie 3 ways. The Oakland Seals get in?

But he was

So what’s the point

It’s been a generation ago. Close to two.

It's still one of the greatest playoff series upsets in NHL history. I was in high school at the time. No one picked the Isles to win that series. I had Pens in 4. That's why they play the games. The next season San Jose upset Detroit in 7. What?

As a Preds fan, so many...

The entire 2005 season, which was a lockout. We had FINALLY turned the corner and made the playoffs, even did well against the Wings in the 2004 playoffs. Things were looking up, we were trending in the right direction. Then the entire 05 season is gone.

or...when I heard the Preds were for sale. Thankfully we had Ek to save us!

or...not being able to get past San Jose in the playoffs (or get to the second round in forever)

or...having Chicago on the ropes in the playoffs and folding like a metal chair.

But the real heartbreak was the Cup Finals. Three things come to mind...the "offside" call, Peks completely tanking one game and the "early whistle". Honorable mentions: Joey and Fiala's injuries. There were bad omens all around that series.

Somewhere, a place where Spock has a goatee, the Preds weren't called for offside, Peks didn't choke in that game and the goal stood. Joey and Fiala skated with the cup along with the rest of the team.

A guy can dream.

Ken Morrow overtime vs the Rangers in 1984 is my biggest hockey heartbreak

amazing that Morrow had 3 playoff overtime winners

only 17 career regular season goals but he had 11 total playoff goals

the Islanders were loaded with guys who stepped it up in the post season in those days

I always felt bad for young David Poile running around the Spectrum in 1966. But old David Poile losing the SCF to the Pens was devastating. I don't think he'll ever recover from this.

I think he was just tired. Old David Poile tried running around Bridgestone arena in 2017 as an old man but he didn't have the stamina he had back in 1966 running around the Spectrum. At least that's what his text to Ek said.

That was sarcasm - mcsorley played well that year and had a career high 15 goals however he played defense and it’s difficult to conceive a scenario where an illegal curve benefited his game or the team. It was a selfish decision motivated by ?? to use that curve.

IF Iron Mike had yanked Belfour Earlier in the series, things might have gotten a bit more interesting...But no way Mario was going to allow Pens to lose that year

Mine is definitely 1993 David Volek... What a horrible Fall 1992-spring1993 time frame in Pittsburgh.
TWO Worst moments in my sports fan life---
#1) Francisco Cabrera
#1a) David Volek.
I attended the game with my dad and after watching Pens tie it with the goalie pulled, there was no one in the building who thought Pens would lose. I thought over the years I even heard that the Canadiens were on their way to Pittsburgh and had to re-rout after the Volek goal. If thats just legend I apologize, but man that one STUNG. Who knew it would be 17 years before the next Cup and Mario would never win another as a player... And the entire hockey world was robbed of Lemieux vs Gretzky in the final.....No disrespect to Montreal (beating Roy was never a sure thing) or the Islanders, but we were all losers in that respect....
