yet hundreds of thousands of people succumb to both every year. it's an inherent risk we all deal with. why is this so different?
that's a rhetorical question.

32,000 people died from the flu last year in this country. That's with ZERO social distancing and rules. That's in a 12 month period.

This has killed 100,000 people in, what, four months? And that's with shutting the country down.

Because this virus spreads at least twice as quickly than flu and the repercussions of letting it ride would overwhelm hospitals. Keep an eye on Brazil. Bolsonaro has been a complete idiot during all of this and his country is beginning to pay a high price because of that reckless stupidity

I am presently on a patio, 12 feet from the nearest patron. I'm not wearing a mask and i usually don't outdoors..if a place gets too crowded for proper social distancing, I'm out. I wear a mask when indoors while shopping but I won't dine indoors at a restaurant. Y'all can take this as lightly as you want, but no one knows if they have it or not and the molecules emanating from you as you breath, speak, cough or sneeze (or even sing) can and will effect someone close enough to you to inhale the virus you have. That's not liberty, it's being selfish and cavalier about it.
- Michael Pachla

No one in here is taking it lightly. we are also aware that there is a 99.5% recovery rate and most of the original fear was overblown/and misdiagnosed

Travel from Brazil is now banned so must have got bad there. They are not the US though. Our hospitals can handle it. So much that all the companies forced to build ventilators aren’t even needed anymore. At least US can sell them

That number drives me insane. I have been on this earth for over 43 years, and if on average 32,000 people die every year in this country from the flu, you'd think I would have to know 1 person out of the 1,376,000 deaths over that time period. Yet, I do not. I realize I live out in the middle of corn fields and cow pastures, but what are the mathematical odds that I do not know 1 freaking person? I just don't believe that number. Sorry. Carry on.

It’s more contagious this more people are getting it then the flu. The death rate is not far off from the flu but there is a bigger population getting it thus more deaths. Wearing a mask/social distancing just slows it down you’ll still get it either way. Dr Fauci has already said this, that 70% of the population will contract the virus. All these “idiots” out in groups are just catching it now rather then later. If the hospitals can handle it why are they idiots???

Despite the hysteria our hospitals were never overwhelmed and we never ran out of care. PPE was short because states and hospitals are greedy and never stockpiled equipment and paid out CEOs and welfare instead.

The goal was (supposedly) to get to herd immunity and not overwhelm the hospital system at the same time. It was never to prevent people from getting it because it was impossible. Hospital capacity is nowhere near overwhelmed, even in states like Florida, Georgia and Texas where the fear porn addicted mob has been predicting the apocalypse for a month now. The percent positive test rate has been flat if not somewhat decreasing despite things being relaxed either by state and local governments or the population saying "enough is enough". The number of cases are going up, but that is because the number of tests being taken are much, much higher, but nobody wants to point that out because it's not as gripping of a headline.

First off, the hospitals were never overwhelmed because of everything that was put into place to NOT overwhelm them.

But, that's not my point.

If the numbers go way up, and they will BECAUSE people are idiots and can't control themselves, guess what's NOT happening?

Phase 2.

So, heck, flock to the beaches and parks and let's act like none of this ever happened. Eff the social distancing, eff the PPE (we must not have to wear it anymore! It's PHASE ONE, PEEPS!). Let's get this thing ROLLING!

People cannot or will not control themselves or act responsibly, and we'll still be paying the price anyway.

Word.

And because people's "rights" are being limited for a few months (the HORROR! I have to wear a cloth mask inside a store for a half hour once a week!), they crowd the parks and beaches the first time they are given a little slack.

Morons.

Fortunately for the rest of us, those "rights" dont disappear because a bunch of idiots watch too much CNN and get scared.

The first sentence is false. Herd Immunity was never the goal. It was all about flattening the curve and it was done through quarantines and strict adherence to social distancing. Herd Immunity is what Sweden is doing and what it seems like the Trump administration and GOP governors are covertly doing right now.

Social distancing and mask are tried and true methods of getting a handle on a pandemic. That's what they did in 1917-18.

We never quarantined the healthy during the pandemic of 1917-1918. We never quarantined the healthy during any period since the inception of this country until now.

I mean they didn’t have any technology or internet either in 1918. Might as well get rid of that too. Can get rid of cars and bring back horse and carriages.

Masks aren't imposing on your freedoms. Any business has just as much of a right to make you wear a mask on its premises as it does to make you wear a shirt and shoes, or a construction contractor has the right to make you wear a hardhat on its project site. You can argue the necessity of it if you want, and even boycott stores that make you wear masks (I guess), but to say they can't do that is ludicrous. The same goes for the opposite. There is a small mom-and-pop shop in Georgia (I think) that is making the rounds on social media for telling people they need to lower their masks when they go inside. They're citing the Constitution, which is wrong, but they do have the right to enforce it.

of course they can do that.
then why are some businesses allowed to be open and some not?
a solid concrete plausible answer would be great. (not from you but in general)

I was told well before this that the right to enforce "no shirt, no shoes, no service" for example, generally came from the local code level, and some cases even state. It is not from Federal law or the Constitution. Perhaps I have that wrong, but either way, businesses have the right to enforce that.
