I think the hospitality and restaurant/food industry would disagree and that's in part why multiple cities have all put in bids. - dbot
If players are supposed to be quarantined there won’t be any team dinners...
They’re talking about NHL teams being required to rent cars for every player because car pooling, ride sharing, taxi and public transit wouldn’t be an option. |

The players don’t get paid during the playoffs. I thought the players have agreed to compete in playoffs to eliminate the escrow. - bloatedmosquito
Traditionally, but they never finished the regular season. What I’m saying is that the NHL hasn’t addressed what the actual revenue benefit (to the league) would be after having to pay all the additional costs required to accommodate so many teams in hotels, with rental cars, families (who choose to join), etc. |

Well. They’re talking about booking out a lot of hotel rooms. For weeks and weeks on end.
With a lack of tourism coming to a city I’m sure the hotel industry wouldn’t think that was nothing.
They’re going to have to eat something.
Who cares if they’re team dinners or separate?

Would the NHL pay those additional costs or would the teams pay it? Teams are responsible to cover their operating costs during the season and playoffs. I’m assuming they would share the cost of hotels, rental cars, etc evenly. Probably less expensive than their usual expenditures.
Some guy posted the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy statement online that provided a glimpse at what an NHL team spends per season (amortized over a 12 month period).
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.n...5047b8716450e7bc2e9e0f2-c
According to the filing, the Coyotes were paying $2.3M per month to operate back in 2009. That’s a lot of money. Again, I’m assuming that playing all games in a hub city would be far less than any team’s usual operating expenses.
I’m going to guess this has a potential to be a big money maker for most of the teams competing just from tv revenue alone. |

Everything I have heard does not include accommodations for family. In fact Burkie yesterday said players want to get out of the house and broke down the time line that they would be away . Obviously the deeper a team goes the longer the time but in the end it will be only two teams. After one month to five weeks only four teams would remain.
Bettman also said yesterday (take it for what you want) this return to play has nothing to do with money. He said all TV deals have already been signed and all contracts have been paid. Obviously it is Bettman and he is hiding stuff but that is what they are going with. He says this is about bringing a conclusion to this season.
Players not returning will be dealt with on a case by case situation and most likely no penalty this year. Next year would mean losing their individual contract .
AS Checker mentioned yesterday if the arenas are not allowed fans we will be talking bankruptcy for some teams. Bettman did say yesterday most owners are very rich people but they also have a lot less money today than they did two months ago.
He says no confirmed date to start the 2021 season , maybe at the Winter Event (January 1) but no firm date.
I strongly believe Lavoie saying there will be no NHL if there is no fans. |

I could see Florida, New Jersey, Phoenix, Carolina and the Islanders, all facing bankruptcy.
How many owners are going to want to continue with revenue sharing, when these teams don't pack their weight now?
Time to streamline the weak, make the league 28 teams, and quit wasting time, trying to "grow" the game.
If they relocate a few teams, look at markets such as Quebec, Portland, Hamilton, etc.
28 teams maximum.
Not sure what they will say or try to do about a high-risk play, such as Max Domi, if I am him, I stay home.
F uck the nonsense. |

I think what is not being being mentioned by the top people is survival of the league. They have lost already hundreds of millions of dollars.
They can survive a lock out because they are not paying money but they can not afford paying salary with not making money.
It may be a desperate act but players are also looking at keeping jobs. There may not be jobs to return to.
I know the NHL are getting called greedy but it is the actual players that have to agree to come back. I think they realize if they say no they better start looking for new jobs. |

Read an article quoting Devan Dubnyk yesterday where he said the players agreed to "a playoff format" not to returning yet. He said there were a lot of details to be worked out before they agree to resume play. I don't feel sorry for the league or the players. |

I’m not disagreeing, what I’m saying is that the NHL has not shared any of the (potential) financials with the PA. While the PA voted to accept the format, they have not formally agreed to return to play, because they don’t know the details yet. Those details were things like how they (and their families) would be kept safe, how the money would work etc. |

Everyone knows it is just an agreement to playoff format.
Again it will all come down to if they want to keep their jobs. Same as anyone on here that has returned to work because of money , the players will need to decide if they want to close the doors or not. They just need to keep in mind if they say no there is a good chance there will be no job to return to. |

Sure, I’m sure hotels would love to have entire floors booked by NHL teams. I would imagine teams would hire a caterer (or the hotel) to provide healthy food for the players on site. If everyone is heading off to their local restaurant (even on a family by family basis) they won’t stop the virus from penetrating their bubble, and then the whole satellite thing was for naught. |

Players have every right to refuse return to work .
If I am an owner and know I can not have fans in my building and will lose 50-80 million a year I think I would say no thanks.
I think most players understand that if they don't agree they will lose their job. |

They might lose their “current” job, but then they will be a FA and can get a new job. If TVares said he wouldn’t come back this year until it was safe do you think they Leafs would fire him? |

How much do you think NBC will pay the NHL for a new contract for games with no fans. Their contract expires next year.
Players are already going to lose 30-50 % in escrow this upcoming year , how much more will they lose if the NHL loses billions next year?
How many teams will file for bankruptcy meaning less jobs.
No player will be fired this year but if Tavares didn't return next year yes TO would gladly shed his 11 mil contract. Another team would probably sign him for 6 mil . |

How does their willingness to play now affect the ability of teams to have fans in the building next year?
If anything, the league starting again now increases the risk that they won’t have fans next year, which to me, makes TV generes revenue even more important - for both the league and the broadcasters.

Exactly how I view it too. The big winners during the pandemic are broadcasters. More eyes on screens. Question is, where will the content come from? |

I believe the NHL will make a play without fans model work, in the short term, without any teams folding, they are too valuable. |

Lets take Jake Virtanen as an example . He refuses to play because he feels it is unsafe . Instead he goes to get lunch at Burger King and later have some of his girlfriends from the Roxy come over for some Jakie time.
Where are this players best chances of picking up the virus ? In a secluded monitored bubble or infesting the skank population?
It does not make sense to me to shut down all of sports and open every other type of business. |
