He's not really crying about it (in fact I haven't read anything directly from him). The owners are (for the most part) in a better financial position than the players. They are going to lose money this season regardless. If they find that shutting the whole season down loses less money than playing empty baseball stadiums the players lose a heck of a lot more than the owners, no (or do the players still get paid a certain percentage?).
I'm with you on your principle. No one wants to listen to a wealthy guy complain that he can't afford to put gas in his jet. I just don't think that is what is happening here. - Chunk
That's what I'm hearing when they interview him.

Short term vs, Long term.
Cancelling the season means they probably lose more fans long term who never come back to the sport. Playing 82 games means that they retain a higher percentage long term, and thus protect long term earnings.
One of the reasons why it would be so great for the NHL to restart before anyone else is that with no other options, ratings would be high. Look at the numbers that The Last Dance and The Tiger Phil showdown delivered ratings wise because of so many people starved for sports programming. - TheTrob
The NHL shut down for a year in 04-05, didn't seem to hurt the fan base. Baseball during most of the summer is not competing against another major sport (in the US anyway). I don't think the fans go anywhere.

Baseball lost 20% of its attendance after coming back from the last work stoppage (94-95 strike). |

Tyler,
Would you be willing to keep a tally on this question to the board:
Would you prefer
1). To beat Edm and advance to net round - where we probably loose. This would result quite likely in a descent prospect available to draft no higher than # 16 and could in time become a solid contributor. Not necessarily a top line or top defense pair
2) or loosing against Edmonton and fairly good opportunity to select #9 or 10/remote chance to move up a few spots. Going to get a very good player here and might be playing nhl this season or next |

I am telling you, each team can RIGHT NOW go into hungry mode and start getting ready both mentally and physically and unlike the part playoff series, where you have maybe a week to plan, each staff can get their teams ready with loads of tactics and strategies for the confrontations.
So I glee that trite "who wants it more" may actually come into plat, a little.
and at draft slot #19 I am more than willing to take the Russian Goalie Askarov, the Russian forward, Rodion Amirov, or one of the Austrian or Czechs, even concussion riddled Hendrix Lapierre, or big defenseman...because there will still be nice players for picking, if they play well in the playoffs-in-offs.... - wiz1901
Askarov at 19 is a nice pipe dream .I bet he goes before 9th ,or very close .. 10 or 11 . Will not get by NJ twice |

Until 1998, Sosa-McGuire, steroids, and home runs.

To me it's bittersweet, knowing it's probably best they lose, but I'll always root for them to win.

Carryover from the last blog. Someone mentioned "screech", something used in Newfoundland. To the uneducated like me, what is it? - boilermaker100
Newfie Screech is a Caribbean rum that became popular in Newfoundland from back in the establishment of settlement here. A dark flavorful rum. Got a bottle in my cupboard, if I had the know-how to post you a pic, I would!
Let me go pour a drink, and toast your query. It's the least I can do!!!

I remember the first space shuttle landing. Was at t restaurant for lunch. We all stood up and applauded and cheered. The Challenger was aweful. I remember them showing the grandstand with the family members just looking into space in disbelief. - LAHawk
I'm so old I remember the Mercury launches from 1961 or 1962. The nuns led us in prayer for the safety of Alan, Gus, John, Wally et al.

Yeah - well - I’m so old that I remember the Sputnik launch, and the launch of the first US satellite (Explorer) after several failures.
*sticks out tongue in derision*
Didn’t have nuns - you got me beat there. |

I'm in the camp that thinks it's better for the youth on the Hawks to get some playoff experience vs. the chance at a high draft pick. The experience from being swept and embarrassed by the Oilers will be invaluable to DeBrincat, Strome, Dach and Boqvist. - DarthKane
As Dumb (or was it Dumber) once said - "so you're telling me there's a chance". YES! That's what I'm telling you when I say the dream is still alive only now it's even better because the young guys get some playoff experience (but lose to the Oil in 5 games) and then get put in the 15 team draft lottery where they will get the #1 pick and select Alexis Lafreniere and all will be well. |

OKAY ... now you've gone and done it. Now you got me thinking "lineups" that I haven't thought of since the lock down. I may just start posting lineups to make up for lost time. Yep ... somehow or someway I see D.Sikura appearing in some future ER lineup proposals. |
