Just saw an article regarding Forbes list of highest paid athletes and Federer is #1.

Even though he’s a fantastic athlete and maybe the best his sport has seen, I can’t believe a tennis player is #1. How many people actually play tennis on a regular basis?

It’s (frank)ing tennis. Not even as interesting as it was in the early 80’s with Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, and John McEnroe.

- bloatedmosquito

Two reasons why he's tops. It's not the same as other sports with contracts/set wages, so it varies much more year to year, and his sponsorship deals are HUGE. That, and the impact the pandemic had on leagues reducing pay for top players. From the BBC:

Federer, 38, moved up four places after earning £86.2m in the past year - about £81m of it in endorsements.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£85m), Messi (£84m) and Neymar (£77.5m) come next, while American basketball player LeBron James (£71.5m) completes the top five.

Boxer Tyson Fury was the highest earning Briton in 11th (£46.2m).

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton came 13th with earnings of £43.7m.

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka was revealed to be the highest paid female athlete earlier this month. She is 29th overall on the list, which was released on Friday.

"The coronavirus pandemic triggered salary cuts for soccer stars Messi and Ronaldo, clearing the way for a tennis player to rank as the world's highest-paid athlete for the first time," said Kurt Badenhausen, senior editor at Forbes.

It’s the beginnings of Road Warrior. Only Lord H is set to survive, the rest of us sheep are destined for the Thunder Dome.

Ok, that makes sense if other athletes have taken pay cuts because of the pandemic. I figured that most of those contracts are guaranteed regardless of reason why they didn’t play. Guess not.

Weren’t the NHL contracts guaranteed and paid in full?

America is launching a space craft and everyone is excited. Isn't that like getting excited about watching the Flintstones again?

It's the possibility of blowing up that people are watching for, like Nascar, watching cars race around an oval track the same way for a billion miles is (frank)ing boring, throw in lots of crashes and millions are glued.

Haven't they been launching rockets since the 60 s ?

I just googled and they estimate 35 000 -40 000 space launches (rockets) have been done to date.

It's tough topic. All I'm saying is that as a celebrity he had different means at his disposal to get his message out. But he chose to bastardize his place of employment to do it. And then cry about it. Different standards I get it but why is he allowed to do it while the rest of us aren't? Tough one...
- LordHumungous

Bastardize?! He knelt. To protest police brutality. Which is still a issue. Which is why they are rioting. Maybe stick to dune buggies and the wasteland if you think he should stick to sports?

Something like 560 new cases in Quebec yesterday. WTF are they doing there to make themselves so susceptible to this virus? I don’t get it.

I mean he repeatedly said he doesn’t see the difference between the two, it seems kind of like he might need the basics
