I agree here. I also agree that Pilut was not given enough time to refine his shortcomings, especially at the expense of Zach (frank)ing Bogosian. - TheSabresTaco
Which suggests the coach was leaning on veteran players to make the post season.
Pilut and antipin, both overseas signings.
Both probably had other options than signing with a perennial bottom 8 team. Maybe not. Maybe they signed in buffalo for that shot at the 6th d spot? |

That's what surprised me the most.
8th defenseman on the sabre= 6th best tampa defenseman
New environment- new results?
He's terrible, but their was a market or 2 for him - Boss34
There was a market, which is antiquated thinking from GMs. The guy's got the body of Mr. Glass and the hockey IQ of the POTUS. Wink.

Depth plus Coburn, Hedman, and McDonough were dealing with injuries. - Buff36
Good points 36
It would be interesting to see our 8th d start on a serious contender. Injuries should have healed by the playoffs.

Right. I guess the deal was interim fulltime roster spot then bench or limited minutes on a great team. If I were him, give me a pen and let me sign. |

A market for an experienced depth defenseman at 1.3m, not really shocking.

Many of them are quoted as saying they see opportunity to make the lineup. Which definitely couldn't be argued at the time of both of their signings.
There was no NHL interest in Antipin, though, after he left Buffalo.
Pilut still has value. That story isn't written yet. |

1.6, IMO, is still way too high for him. Not my (team's) money I guess. |

Maybe the Sabres like Bryson better - Buff36
As Taco said. I hope that is the case, but they should have traded him then for forward help, as he was a trade piece other teams would have liked.
Hell, look what Vegas gave up for their nice Center find of Chandler Stephenson that you brought up yesterday. |

They clearly needed to outbid some teams, which is hilarious in of itself, but yes I guess warm bodies are better than none.
Like I said, he brought them down. If you value a guy that makes you worse then.. have at it. Just don't be Jason Botterill. |

I agree, don't understand that, but as a RFA the Sabres still own his rights, and still could be used. |

GM sets the roster.
Coach determines lineup.
If the GM hasn't called up Pilut, how does the Coach play him? - IonSabres
the last straw for pilut, so I was told
was calling him up for a road trip, so he missed the ahl all star game
only to sit in the press box

That's a great (frank)ing question. He's bad, and he proved it on both teams this year. 1.6M is a whole lot for what he provides, which is solely, undoubtedly, depth.
Tampa offered him regular playing time on a playoff team. At an amazing deal for him. He brings elements the other players don't bring, including IQ and skill. - TheSabresTaco
Why did Tampa give up a 2020 first round pick for Barclay Goodrow?
It's an overreaction to the first round sweep loss to the Blue Jackets last year. |

And that's just atrocious management. Call up Borgen, or someone not in the all star game if you need a healthy body to back up for a game or two. It was dumb. |

The bolded is a tremendously common failing of NHL coaches.
I mean, it was working so well with the Sabres last year. Why try something else? |

The veteran player concept is such trash. How it's not simply a case by case scenario is mind bottling. |
