I'm not sure they ran this by JFJ
"Nine members — a veto-proof majority — of the Minneapolis City Council pledged on Sunday to dismantle the city’s Police Department, promising to create a new system of public safety in a city where law enforcement has long been accused of racism.
Saying that the city’s current policing system could not be reformed, the council members stood before hundreds of people who gathered late in the day on a grassy hill, and signed a pledge to begin the process of taking apart the Police Department as it now exists.
Council members said in interviews on Sunday that they did not have specific plans to announce for what a new public safety system for the city would look like. They promised to develop plans by working with the community, and said they would draw on past studies, consent decrees and reforms to policing across the nation and the world." |

if you defund police forces (less money for salaries and education) it will be even worse qualified people making sure some general accepted rules are enforced in a specific place.
it is truly an idiotic idea to get rid of police forces. |

why do you say it's worse qualified people? its not getting rid of policing, it's saying that the existing structure in that place is so badly flawed that is has to be replaced with something new. hard to criticize the new thing until you see it. also it makes sense to move money into community programs |

there are 1000s of things that make sense.
putting money into community programs is one.
but to dismantle a police force (and i'm in particular referring to people suggesting to 'defund police' as in getting rid of police) is utterly stupid.
one would laugh about the situation in US if it wasn't that sad.
to consider themselves 'the best country in the world' is utterly dumb.
(btw, there was a nice perspective about many countries in the world 'feeling US's knee on their necks for many many years')
edit: and of course if there is less money for proper training programs and less salary, you'll have even worse quality in police officers. |

you're arguing against something that's not a serious suggestion so quit wasting space.
the proposal is to get rid of the police department and build something new. that has on the table in Minneapolis where they have concluded that the existing force is so corrupted and so bad for blacks it can't continue.
why assume that an overall reduction in budget and shift to community supports means less money for training and salaries. Why not cut back on the whole militarization policing where they spend money on armored personnel carriers, assault rifles, submachine guns, flashbang grenades, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, etc.
training can be good and bad. obviously it depends on what you're training and what police methods are in place. Chauvin was training when he killed George Floyd. |

This is precisely why the current Minneapolis Police Department needs to be completely dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up. Cops like Chauvin are training the next generation to be as corrupt, abusive, and murderous as the previous gangsters who ran the dept.
You can't band-aid this institution. |

interestingly, the son of the attorney general who will try Chauvin is one of the council members
For years, activists have argued that MPD has failed to actually keep the city safe, and City Councilmembers echoed that sentiment today during their announcement. MPD’s record for solving serious crimes in the city is consistently low. For example, in 2019, Minneapolis police only cleared 56 percent of cases in which a person was killed. For rapes, the police department’s solve rate is abysmally low. In 2018, their clearance rate for rape was just 22 percent. In other words, four out of every five rapes go unsolved in Minneapolis. Further casting doubt on the department’s commitment to solving sexual assaults, MPD announced last year the discovery of 1,700 untested rape kits spanning 30 years, which officials said had been misplaced.
The Council’s move is consistent with rapidly-shifting public opinion regarding the urgency of overhauling the American model of law enforcement. Since Floyd’s killing and the protests that ensued, officials in Los Angeles and New York City have called for making deep cuts to swollen police budgets and reallocating those funds for education, affordable housing, and other social services. Law enforcement officers are not equipped to be experts in responding to mental health crises, often leading to tragic results—nationally, about half of police killings involve someone living with mental illness or disability. As a result, public health experts have long advocated for dispatching medical professionals and/or social workers, not armed police, to respond to calls related to substance use and mental health. Polling from Data for Progress indicates that more than two-thirds of voters—68 percent—support the creation of such programs, versions of which are already in place in other cities such as, Eugene, Oregon; Austin, Texas; and Denver, Colorado. |
