There's such a desire and often rush to get players on value deals due to seeing players production explode right after a deal is signed, like Pastrnak, Marchand, Draisaitl, etc. under the guise of roster flexibility in terms of the cap, but getting it wrong is way too under reported and under considered when it only often takes one missed player evaluation that turns into a bad value deal to almost totally sink your cap flexibility for the length of said bad deal, that prudence is almost always warranted and the proper course of action, despite how many react to that approach.
