I can only speculate on what's being reported, but I wouldn't blame the Sabres for being interested.

While he's not quite Ryan ORiley, Hertl would fill a hole here. But I have also heard that the Sharks aren't interested in trading Hertl because he's young, affordable and fits into the Sharks longterm plans. If they traded him, they would just be opening up a new hole to fill.
