Great post Stripes!
Thank you for the response.

I may have officiated my last ECHL game...

If they don't play this year there is no way I would be able to take a year off and come back like nothing happened.

I was planning on retiring this season but it got cut short and my family wasn't there for my last game...which is why I was going to come back for one more year.

dec. 12 at home vs. Nashville...the starting six were:

Montour - risto
McCabe - miller
Scandella - joker

bogo was scratched...

who ya taking out of the lineup?

- Michael Pachla

when you realize scandella is not part of your future, pilet should have been playing nightly with the big club

Not enough to move the needle.

I think Joker plays a much more important role in the future of the club than Pilut, so having a veteran next to him on the blue line was their thought process and like it was mentioned before, like Tallinder did with Myers his rookie year

Interesting question.
Rather than answer it directly, because that misses the mark on poor Asset Management.

I'll say that having 5 RhD on the roster (with Bogo scratched for that night) was the crux of my issue. One or two of Risto, Montour, Miller should have been moved, it was obvious to all when Miller was traded for back in July.
With that, Pilut comes in and plays his left side.

Upon the Trade Request by Bogo, it was very obvious that Bogo's trade value was zero. Keeping him also impacted the Cap negatively, was further exacerbated when he traded for Frolik ... all of which resulted in an unnecessary Cap hit rollover of Bonuses to this year.

That is text book piss poir Asset and Cap Management from the Miss-Mgmt 2020 winner

- IonSabres

ok...

let's say bogo was jettisoned...would you rather have pilut as a reserve/bottom-pairing role with much time in the press box in buffalo?...or would you rather he play top, all-around minutes in Rochester?

pilut/risto was one of our better pairs in 18-19

did they even try them together in 19-20?

he didn't move the needle in buffalo when he was recalled...

I can't understand why people would want him to struggle in a third-pairing nhl role or be up in the press box in a reserve role when he could get top-pairing minutes in the ahl honing his game

Didn't Pilut struggle down the stretch?

I mean the entire team did but I feel like he struggled, that pair was great for like 8-10 games and then it went south

Given those two options only, play in the AHL

However,
If
A) Risto were moved in July for much needed help in the Forward ranks
B) Bogo was sacked on 12/12 going forward
When Dahlen went down...Pilut slides in rather than playing Montour on his off side.
And when Scandella was moved, he plays there.

Mike, it was bad asset management from Botts, not limited to when Pilut was called up...rather the whole roster construction...and THAT is the point.

1. had to learn north america game
2. 2 different nhl coaches in 2 years
3. 2 ahl all star games

and he walks

poor asset management

kind of like trading the first pick in the 6th round, for a late 6th rd pick in the following draft

and the kick in the nuts, call him up so he can't play in ahl all star game, just to sit in the presser on a road trip

I mean darcy let botts play in an ahl all star game, why couldn't botts do the same for pilut?

Solid post

A 7th or 8th defenseman on the 7th worst team in the nhl.

Couldn't force his way into the lineup? Like joker for example

the spin from sabres camp is unreal

you trade for montour, joker and miller to go with risto and bogo on the RD

you say joker earned a spot, yet when other young players earn a spot they don't get it

I mean just say montour and bogo were hurt, so joker got a spot and then we were in cap hell from all the crappy vets we brought in

call it what it is

mccabe was blah
scandella was blah
dahlin was out for a while

if our coach is really good, a two time ahl all star is a good body to put in the lineup from time to time

My main frustration is quite simply the Asset Management side.
To lose a non-UFA player for nothing is really inexcusable to me.
I'm not saying he was a 1st pairing, but he was much better that Bogo for sure
Oh well, what is done is done.

- IonSabres

Did he really hold much trade value? I don't think he'd be in the KHL if he did.

This is just Antipin all over again. He had an opportunity, couldn't lock down a spot, and went home. I'm already over him.

It did.
Yet only 4 games.

Like I said before, I agree it was piss poor Asset Mgmt, and he could have fit in without a doubt.
It would have been interesting to research his 33 games last season as again, the eye test for me was that he started out really strong...then teams figured him out...get close on him and apply pressure..the turnovers came to the point he became very much less productive and prone to turnovers.
They didn't analyze that though.

The giveaway versus takeaway metrics per Evolving Hockey and Natural Stat Trick:

19-20 = 4 giveaways vs. 2 takeaways (-2)
18-19 = 14 giveaways vs. 7 takeaways (-7)

Sabres Context 19-20 season (league rank):

Jake McCabe -2 (24th)
Rasmus Ristolainen -7 (50th)
Bogosian -7 (56th)
Montour - 15 (103rd)
Colin Miller -20 (143rd)
Jokiharju -23 (162nd)
Dahlin -27 (188th)
Marco Scandella -31 (200th)

League Wide Context:

Only 17 players league wide were even or plus when it came to giveaway vs. takeaways in the 19-20 season.

Top 5:

Jaccob Slavin +32
Mark Pysyk +11
Victor Hedman +7
Zach Whitecloud (VGK) +7 (only 16 games played, and my cutoff was a 15 game minimum)
Erik Johnson (COL) +5
Connor Clifton (BOS) +5

I am not sure how valuable a stat giveaways and takeaways are unless the numbers for a given player are glaring.

It must not have been that important to them as they traded Scandella for Frolik.
