True. Both sides need to worry about the next few years not some 'new season tournament playoff' 5 months after the regular season is halted.
- Marwood

I think it makes things a lot harder not having a conclusion to the year. There could also be TV obligations being met who knows?

If I am the owners I don't know why I would agree to start a new season in 5 months with no fans allowed in the building. I would say I will wait for the vaccine.

This is a group discussion by both sides to see how they can fix things.

It’s fair value for a 16-22 goal scoring middle six guy if you look around the league.

It was fair value for him , we need to see what the new fair value contracts look like.

I can't see this years contracts being on par with last years contracts.

I wonder if the NHL will look at saying there is no free agency this year everyone's contract will be be moved forward one year?

I know that sounds crazy but how can they have a playoff if players are not under contract?

They definitely couldn't move contracts forward a year, but they could probable just move them until the playoffs are over. Would seem like the normal compromise.

It's more like a new season that 7 teams weren't invited to.

PO are no paycheques. Nothing to move forward other than the UFA signing period.

Contracts won’t change. Every player faces the same reality, that the value of their contract will be lower than what they signed for. Do you think this year’s free agents will take a double hit? Won’t happen.

They have to move the contracts forward. If they don't, and players contracts expire July 1, then they won't be under contract to play in the playoffs. Doesn't really have much to do with the money of the contract.

The only thing I think for sure is that this is a year like no other. Ever.I see sports leagues looking to shut down the year like MLB CFL AHL . This is not a year that players associations should be trying to flex their muscles.

Not really . After July 1 as it is now Pietrangelo can sign with NJ or another team not playing in the PO and tell STL no thanks.

As of now it’s up in the air. It will be addressed & part of the NHL/NHLPA talks to iron out all matters of concern.

So Canada knows what they are doing & has covid under control Toronto excluded who is still in the running & the US not even close. The 14 day quarantine is not an issue it’s wise. So the US in their stupidity value money over public safety & health. How very American & no surprise to anyone.

I’m not saying they should. What I’m saying is that because revenues are down, salaries are down. Asking a player (Toffoli) to take a discount because of COVID is asking him to take two discounts while everyone else is taking one. He can still sign his 5 x $5, and for the first year (or more) he will get X% of that because league revenue is down. He still needs to fit into league salary alignment with similar players.

Pretty sure the league and players have given approval to continue on with talks for trying to get playoffs completed.
In my opinion, that would mean that the players have given tacit approval to have contracts extended until some resolution to playoffs.
But what the f uck do I know, I have only been involved in union's for 35 years, including negotiations and grievance process.
Maybe we need some of the smart guys to chime in.

Agreed.

Haven't figured out the escrow in it's entirely yet, but if the players have to take a paycut(escrow), each player should end up taking the same % hit.
One of the issues that will arise out of that though, is some players make a salary of 15 million as an example, this season, yet their caphit might only be 10 million.
Those discussions will have to take place.

That may be true, I’m only saying his contract won’t be less than market value, or shorter, because of uncertainty. Everyone is uncertain. If there is no hockey nobody gets paid, if there is everybody gets paid.
