UFA's don't build teams and never have. I say stay away from them except maybe a solid 3rd or 4th liner or if they need 3rd line D. Build the rest of the team through the draft and trades.
- GilPerreault11

Give the term to Eichel (already done), Dahlin, Cozens (hopefully he earns it) and possibly Reinhart (depending on AAV).

Don’t give the term to guys that are on the back nine unless their name is Panarin or Tavares (yet even leaf fans might be kicking themselves with that contract in a few years)

to offer sheet someone, you need to have your own pick

in normal years, when offer sheeting someone this summer, it involves 2021 picks

we are lacking a 3rd and a 5th in 2021

the third rd pick we do not have for this 2020 draft, would have prohibited us from offer sheeting someone LAST summer

- homiedclown

Yes, that is why I referred to "next years 3rd"...2021.

Boss was going down a path of trading toget it back.

It’s been stated that he wanted to go high AAV and less term which really would have been the right move.

However Pegula signs the cheque I guess right.

- Pegullaville

Wait what? How much higher AAV was Skinner going to get above what he got? All the alleged intel from posters (I call bs on besides 89 and Buff39) on here have been saying Pegula is pinching pennies, yet they wanted to spend MORe money on Skinner? Typical Cluelesssville responding to respond without thinking through reply. Aren’t u tired of getting bludgeoned? You’re entering Crooked Broadary territory.

Buffalo needs to have success by drafting, developing, and making trades.

You’re right, we do have to overpay to bring talent here. But how many times has overpaying in UFA been a good move for any team ?

Sure and Skinner really had a negligent impact on the success of the team this year at $9M.

Was he worth it even this year ? Never mind once he hits 30 and he’s a $9M 3rd line winger.

- Pegullaville

yeah, he didn't have a good year...the reasons are many, and i'd even include the weight of that huge contract, but there's no reason to believe he won't become that 30-goal scorer once again

He got the high AAV and the max term.

I knew it wasn’t a coincidence that it took so long to get that deal done.

$9M year for a 4-5 year term is a much easier pill to swallow then 8 years.

Are we a better team with Skinner ? Of course.

Was it worth having him here this year while we are still spinning our tires or will it be worth having him at $9M AVV the last 3 years of that deal ? No, and No
I’ll be happy to eat my humble pie if it comes to that because we really need Skinner to produce at that cap hit.

couldn't agree more...yet we (myself included) spend countless days/weeks/months discussing such possibilities, especially over the past decade-plus when the sabres were looking for centers and/or (mostly 'and') scoring forwards

They were in tough for sure. Skinner just scored 40. Think Skinner knew he had them over a barrel. No win situation for Botterill. Could not let him walk or their would’ve been riots. Alleging the Pegulas demanded it sounds like a made up plot trying to defend Botts. Botts blew that. It’s totally on him. I’m more likely to believe Pegulas will demand Adams to trade Skinner now. Probably yield a return we don’t like and Skinner will return to form and make Sabres look foolish like ROR did.

Careful.
Weren't you predicting that ROR would fall off a cliff at age 28? Back issues would slow him down early?
He's 29 and produced the same as always; 60 - 65 pts...probably would have been close to 70 if played 82 games.

For as much flak as Mojo gets that was actually a pretty sensible FA signing.

If they allowed him to play his natural position that would have been great value. Is the AAV a tad high, sure it is. That 2 year term though is gravy.

I’m sure he’ll be motivated next year also in a contract year and can provide depth scoring.

Every indication is that Skinner will rebound and his poor production was bad luck and lack of PP time + bad linemates.

His primary center was one of the worst centers in hockey in Johansson

I’ll accept the fact he didn’t have much help.

However he sucked on the PP and has never scored back to back 30 goal seasons so that just goes to show you that he has knack for creating chances but has been on this seesaw ride of “luck” his entire career.

No you’re right, I thought this year he’d start slowing down. He had another great year. Kudos to him.

I think we have a similar player in Cozens to be quite honest though so there is the silver lining for that trade at least.

I still think ultimately ROR didn’t fit the timeline we have here but we should have not have traded him for below market value.

I like Skinner. Glad they have him. Did Botts wait too long to get him extended? I think he did. Lost all leverage in the matter. Should’ve got it done during the season. Maybe that was on Skinner and wanted to go to free agency, I don’t know, but if I remember correctly, Skinner was saying he wanted to stay all through the year.

So what I miss, 51 trades, a bunch of picks traded, and most of are prospects dealt in the last 6yrs. Imagine that and we still blow.

I mean, by his standards I wouldn’t say he had a great season by any means.. 12 goals, by far the lowest they’ve been in a while, possession numbers dropped from the year prior, nearly half of his assists were of the P2 variety. Still an awful trade, I’m just saying the might have been a little Cup hangover there (alcohol pun intended)

That’s how I remember it. But when he starts the season as hot as he did and kept going, wouldn’t you want to see how many goals you could score to pump your value? I mean, when he’s nearing 30 with 3/4 of the season played if Botts offered 7M per he’s still getting that at the end of the season even if he dries up

I thought Skinner said he wasn't discussing contracts until after the season. He said it as few times in interviews.

He also reportedly wanted to see who the new coach was going to be before extending

So Lightning have several players and staff who tested positive for Covid-19, shutting down their facility for a bit.
Should be an interesting ride for the next several weeks and months ahead.
