This likely comes down to which conference you're more familiar with. I'm more familiar with the West so they seem tougher and the East seems more finesse. |

In the playoffs, the who does the more hitting thing seems to go out the window. The thing that truly seems to matter is how big teams are. And that is where the west still has that advantage. |

It's more like who gets away with the most obstruction. If you want to call that being physical? |

If we're speaking historically, of course it's the east, but in recent years, more teams in the West still tend to lean towards a more physical, 'heavier' style of play. When I think of the East, I think of teams like Toronto and Tampa flying up and down the ice. With such a emphasis in today's game being placed on speed, especially on mobile puck-moving defensemen, the number of teams willing to commit to or emphasis a heavier style of play is rapidly dwindling anyway. For the purpose of answering your question though, more teams have come out of the West in recent years that I would call physical hard-hitting teams than the East. |

The lightning are one of the biggest, most physical teams in the league. |

The most vivid counterexample I can think of in the past 20 odd years is the Ducks-Sens finals. Sens were such a skill team. But right after game 1, it was clear it was a physical mismatch. Pronger and Beauchemin and Getzlaf just bullied them. |

Saying the East thins it down. If you said the Metro division, then h ell yes. There is genuine dislike for most every team that is in that division. Nearly every match-up could be argued as a rivalry to a degree. |

Any perception that the East Coast is tougher is based on East Coast bias and is total nonsense. Player on every team come from all over the world and don't pick teams based on how physical they are.
It's not like college football where great defensive prospects would be more inclined to go to the SEC or Big 10 based on reputation, rather than the Big 12 or Pac 12 |

After getting a beatdown from Torts and Columbus, Tampa toughened up. Added Maroon and Schenn. Between them, Bogo, Coburn, Cernak, and Paquette, nobody is going to push the Bolts around this year.
