Well then Send him to Calgary for Monahan and go get Tuch and Anderson to play RW. - Buff36
I'd rather have D Strome myself. I think he's a better fit, younger, and should cost less both Acquisition and Contract wise.
If Monahan is as lackadaisical on D, can you imagine him and Skinner both in Krueger's dog house playing 4th line minutes, lol. Just put Okposo with those 2 and you'd have a ~$22m 4th line!

I totally agree, it's gonna be hard to pry that 2C and I think people need to start opening there eyes to that. |

It will always be "bailed out" .. and should be.
However, malfeasance must be properly identified and punished and we're not even close that that (yet) - farooge

Strome has all the same issues defensively as Monahan. |

why the hell does so many people want to sell the farm for Gaudreau
12 months after he plays his first sabre game, he will be another soupy or briere
trade him at the deadline or let him walk for nothing

Everybody wants a 2C, either we get one that has defensive deficiency but good offensive and deal with the defense, or we get one that really isn't a real 2C or just a placeholder. Or do we just let the 6th best prospect in hockey right know take the reigns and run with it. The more you look into what's out there and what may be available, there really isn't much to go and get. - Buff36
I think you described the reality of the situation perfectly, as there is no ideal #2 Center out there who has no issues AND is actually available (Cirelli as an example). Every Center that is available has issues of some kind.
The challenging question then becomes do you go for a past, present, or future solution.
If you go past, you're looking at a Bonino, Henrique, or Backlund (Calgary) type, but then how much are you giving up and how long is the contract?
If you go present, then you're talking somebody like Strome or Monahan. If Cozens is the real deal and proves it by late next season, do you figure out what to do down the road? What about the expansion draft and protecting players?
If you go future, then you're trying to pry someone like Hintz from Dallas or Newhook from the Avalanche (as you mentioned yesterday). If you go that route, you would still need to bring in another Center for right now, likely via UFA, but how appealing are those options?
Filling the Center void for next season is a multi layered question without any simple solutions. |

Just because casey failed and it seemed rushed. Doesnt mean cozens wont be ready for 2c in January 2021 or beyond.
I understand the "sam is our best asset to trade for a 2c," but maybe a new face at 1rw would work.
Really only jack and dahlin should be safe. Maybe cozens and olloffson?

Trading sam is not = "selling the farm"
π
As a Sabres fan, its year to year.
If next year johnny hockey gets us to the playoffs next year, I'm fine with him being traded the following deadline or used for another run. |

so give up assets for a maybe, and then sell for 30 cents on the dollar
makes sense, we can afford to do that as we are loaded with a full pipeline of prospects to make up the difference |

Great post.
IMO, Cozens is the future, but there is risk for sure...so I wouldn't want to double down through a trade for another Future candidate.
Still, I'm torn between the present and the past concepts.
Past candidates could be a good mentor scenario and may cost less to acquire, while Present candidates offer the possibility of securing a return from a trade in 2 or 3 years.
I'd prefer to go Present candidates, and back down to Past if necessary. |

The Sabres dont need another LW, unless of course they really like the quadruple redundancy they have at 2RhD and are actively trying to mirror it. |

For me, the present would be Strome, Hintz, or Copp while the past would be Henrique (I would include Bonino, but I don't believe he is available).
If they need to make the playoffs as an imperative, they need 2 from the group above.
It certainly won't be easy. |

I think, assuming you let the ufa's walk
bring in Soderberg on a 1 year deal or Haula on a 3 year deal
bring in Smith on a 3 year deal
hope either casey or cozens is ready and the forward group is an upgrade |

It's time to give up assets for a maybe. What better time? After 10 years without the playoffs. New nhl record bad.
I would think olloffson could flip sides

Why not bring in both Soderberg and Haula, assuming one of the two is a 1 year deal?
I've always liked Craig Smith as a quality addition to the forwards. |

And that's a problem because you're using more assets on 1 area, and takes away from being able to use them for other things. |

I brought up Haula the other day, very talented but you have to worry about that knee. Might be the best placeholder out there, could be the perfect 1yr deal candidate. |

Not a bad lineup - chilliard77 like i told fitz, it's under $75 million, which is a number I've been trying to work with...if there's more money to spend, then all the better for upgrades |
