Sure, but the situation of the other top teams doesn't change the Leafs situation and doesn't mean that they can magically stop looking ahead at their salary situation. - Aetherial
I get the need for a goaltender and I’m high on Askarov, but not at 5th overall. - RickJames77
Yep it’s just too much to pass on some elite talent to go a G.
I like Stutzle & any of Perfetti, Drysdale, Raymond or Rossi that are leftover. If a trade down from 5 to 8 or so then Askorov if the sweetener is enough. That’s the Sabres so might have to be 9 or so.

Oh ya, I forgot about Stützle.
He might go second.
Byfeild would be to good to pass on. - Arctic_AARDVARK
I don't know. Byfeild is, I think, one of the younger guys in the draft? He's gonna fill out and get strong on top of getting a year more of experience.
I think he'd make a great 3C for a few years and he gets to learn from two of the best in Tavares and Matthews.

If I had 3 and 5, with 3 I'd take whichever is left between Stutzel and Byfeild and either the d-man Drysdale or trade down to 9 or 10 and take Askarov.
And I'd only do the second part because the Leafs goaltending/D prospects are meh (not including Liljegren and Sandin who will be Leafs). Otherwise, I'd take Rossi, 'cause he looks hella skilled.

I get the admiration for Byfield Gigsy, but unless the stars line up and Leafs get Laffy, Leafs are not picking 2nd. I hope Leafs get Alex Cotton in round 2. If not him Shakir Mukhamadullin just to hear Hughson butcher his name.

Someone else said a trade that involved Marner for #3 and #5 overall, so I was going off that.
EDIT: I didn't watch a whole whack of Junior this past season outside of the games I watched of Kingston so I could watch Shane Wright. So I don't know who I'd like the Leafs to get in the 2nd round this year.

Don't see how that trade would help either team. Marner is already very good. What do you think the chances are that both the 3rd and 5th will turn out to be excellent? Alexandre Daigle says hi, and the Leafs are not in rebuild mode.

Unlike many, I like Liljegren. I think he has potential and I agree with slow playing him. What the Leafs might be thinking is adding is a bigger 2nd pair RHD with their second pick. Not a meathead but a guy with some size that can skate and defend. Might be wishful thinking though

You started a good discussion. Dog days of boredom needed something to chew on lol - Nighthawk
It requires too much thought for some people; me among them at the moment. Some days I don't have the patience for mathing some people.
When someone's answer is that Morgan Rielly will not get a raise when he is a free agent at 28, well, at that point there is really nothing left to discuss.

He'll get a raise, sure, but if the salary cap doesn't go up, it'll be less than it otherwise would. And even if he decided to go somewhere else, they won't have huge amounts of cap space either, because every team that is at all good (and some that suck) are also, just like the leafs, going to be in a cap crunch.
That's why it matters, that other teams will also feel a crunch. Because he'll have less leverage in the threat of going elsewhere, because the only teams that will be able to offer him a lot more than the leafs will be poop teams or ones that need to move out huge pieces in order to fit him.
Every decent team is in the same situation as the Leafs, because noone expected Covid or the effect it would have on the salary cap.

I think that most people who don't like him haven't watched the Marlies much. He's been nothing short of fantastic there and was easily the Marlies best player. I'm excited for his future and I very much hope the Leafs don't trade him.
Bolded- As long as the guy can skate, I've got no problem with the Leafs drafting them. Skating is too important in the game now.
