this time Dubas will need to be more creative in his juggling.
we well see more Clarkson type of deals for LTIR space. - dmnted
AJ,Kap and Kerfoot all have very low salaries compared to their cap hits.
Those contracts are valuable, especially when teams aren't making money. |

I guess but also the Leafs had made the playoffs more times in the last 5 years (including this year) than the Hawks have, so.

They won't trade Marner.
Nylander could definitely be traded to make room for a #1 RHD. - Atomic Wedgie
I believe it is a more realistic expectation to draft and develop your top d-men than trade for one or get some good fortune with a UFA. How many #1 D-men that are not near the age of retirement would be available by either trade or sign as a UFA right now by your estimation? |

I don't think we can wait for a #1D to be drafted and developed.
Pieterangelo may be available as a UFA. Yeah, I know, cap hell, etc.
But he's from King City, and maybe he wants to sign a short-term deal due to frozen cap and possibility there may not be a season next year, or at least a very reduced one.
The UFA route makes it very interesting, because then you can trade Nylander for assets.
So it's not Pieterangelo for Nylander - it's Pieterangelo + assets for Nylander - that's a huge win. |

That's a great example, and I think it would be a no brainer because Leafs could probably get good futures for Nylander. But AP is the current captain of a cup winning team - how likely is he going to be a UFA?

The blues only have $2 million in space and RFA Vince Dunn to sign.
I'm sure there are contracts they'd like to be rid of, but it'sd going to be tough to convince someone to take a $5.75 million Alex Steen (who has an NTC) or $5 million Tyler Bozak.
Signing Faulk to that $6.5 mill per. extension really (frank)ed themselves. |

Just had an interesting new spam phone call.
Apparently my transaction of $1,300,000 was successful, and if I want to do any further financial moves, I just have to call them back at that number.
Obviously I'm happy with the $1,300,000 transfer I just did, so I didn't bother to call them back. - Atomic Wedgie
I got a similar one a few days back. Saying my EI payment of $1.2M was successfully transferred into my bank account. |

The easiest solution IMO is to send Steen to Robidas Island or borrow Hossa's jock strap and trade Parayko. They could get a decent haul for Parayko and sign AP with the savings.

Leafs are gonna win the cup and a parade will be illegal. - BINGO!
Obviously excluding my team winning, I think that might be the #1 reason I want the Leafs to win.
After so long of the chirps being "plan the parade", not being able to actually have a parade would be hilarious. Like, on top of winning, it's poopting in the face of the chirp.
Not having a parade would suck, though, but I can live without it because of how funny I'd find it. |

This.
You have to assume players and management discuss a player's future plans when UFA status is upcoming.
It's not like Player X is a UFA end of the season and management just walks by him in the hallway on the way to the locker room.
From the signings the Blues have done, it seems pretty clear his walking. |

This is what I have been saying for days. Pietrangelp should be our target with other options being back up plan.
Just like Tavares a couple years ago. You can make the money work after the fact. Get Pietrangelo if we can and then shift assets around to make the money work.

the only problem is term.
The dude is 30. How many more years of being any good does he have?
Be careful you don't paint yourself deeper in the corner. |

Term would be an issue.
As always though. The leafs can front load the contract and pay him extra now. Makes the contract much easier to move to cash poor team if his performance starts to slip.

What would a team trade for Marner?
He is only owed 900K this year now...and then 10,8,8,8.
Trading for a star knowing you only have to pay him 900K in a potentially short season has to be worth something. |

I think the thing going in Pietrangelo's favour as he gets older is that his game doesn't rely on blinding speed to be good.
So while there will more than likely be a drop off, it shouldn't be huge or quick.
If he wants to be a Leaf, then I think it's a good gamble to make. |
