They’re going to be alot of D men floating around and available in trade once all the ramifications of a flat cap and draft take place...
Leafs need 1 solid / good RHD and probably a secondary D man to fill out the last pair..
Teams are going to be wheeling and dealing to protect their guys for Seattle...
Leafs don’t need to worry much at all. If it really gets down to brass tacks they have trade chips that can garner damn near any RHD they want. - dozerD10
Pietrangelo would be an excellent player to have but I don't think they can afford him. The Leafs need to add 2 more defensemen that can play their position properly. They don't need all stars, they need guys that can defend well.

Lol - I played with Kevin. Holy poop was he good. I remember being in my bunkbed thinking we were going to destroy him and I was so amped up. We lost 9-1

As the cap drops or plateaus, they may come to take advantage of the leafs.
They may not have the ability to garner the rhd they want

Hit with a hard dose of reality, eh? We've all been there.
I went to high school with a bunch of people who became professional athletes.
No to Ristolainen.
No to Pietrangelo.
People saying trade Johnsson & Kerfoot instead of Nylander - have to realise that it is not just the capspace, but as well the fact that you have to fill two roster spots instead of 1 + obviously Nylander gets higher return (pp specialist 2nd line winger that produces points vs 2 3rd liners on relatively meh contracts).
So not a lot of change - except for the big trade of Nylander + Johnsson (+potentially Dermott) for a 1st line D-partner for Rielly (ideally a RHD).
obviously very hard to get a legit young topline D for Nylander, Johnsson (+).
most obvious candidates:
Seth Jones / McAvoy --> Columbus and Boston surely will not be interested in dealing them.
LHD-men Provorov and Heiskanen unavailable as well for that package.
We're then left with options like Girard (LHD), Makar, Fabbro, Dumba.
Dumba is just not good enough imo - would definitely not trade Nylander in a one-for-one for him, Nylander has way more value.
Girard I like - but probably not the right partner for Rielly.
Makar is a no for sure.
and Fabbro is not worth Nylander.
Which kind of leaves only one option left on the table:
Aaron Ekblad.
Ekblad for Nylander + Johnsson + something might be something Florida could enterntain - depending on their financial status ánd if Florida feel they could land Pietrangelo.
Florida has some good young forwards coming up, but if Hoffman (and Dadonov) would leave, it would make sense for them to adding Nylander and Johnsson(or Kerfoot) to that roster.
Very very unlikely though that Quenneville is willing to give up Ekblad - unless he feels Pietrangelo is a better fit (and Pietrangelo + Nylander give him a better option on getting into playoffs than with Ekblad).
So it seems Dubas has a very tough job ahead - and since he isn't much of a risk-taker, he'll likely will make a move to get some depth D in FA, and keep Nylander. (still has to trade at least one of Johnsson/Kerfoot/Kapanen).
I wonder what the return for 2 of Kapanen/Kerfoot/Johnsson will be..

No thanks to all of this.
Ekblad would be cool but would be the last player Florida would trade.
It’s time for people to start getting realistic on these d targets. Find D who are actually available.

Pietrangelo at 10mlnAAV+
Krug at 6.25mlnAAV+
Vatanen a 5mln AAV+
Tanev at 5mln AAV+
Gudas?
Dillon?
Polak?
take your pick..
to me personally - looking at the salary cap implications, I would almost prefer Krug over Pietrangelo (depending on the AAV difference between both contracts).
I like Krug's play - I could see a Rielly - Krug pairing working. (Krug isn't your typical defensive d-man at all, but he would fit Leafs playing style well, good in exiting the d-zone, he's quite aggressive and great on the PP). He's basically a better Jake Gardiner. (which means without the huge defensive flaws, although not great in his own zone + he can actually produce on a PP).
I think Pietrangelo might sign with Sabres / Colorado for a 11mln AAV/7y contract -- playing with Dahlin or Girard.
Hard for Leafs to beat such an offer.
Alternatively, he could join Detroit (Yzerman) / Florida (taxes!!! and weather).
I see Leafs as the 5th option - still very realistic, but hard for the Leafs to beat out those teams on the pure financials.
So I'm all for adding Krug as an alternative to Pietrangelo.
