If Malkin signed his 5 year extension the same year Matthews did, his cap hit would’ve been 12.45m.

The rest of your post is nonsense, and not worth acknowledging.

- Steven_Seagull

you fail to mention that Malkin won the Art Ross, scored 113 points in regular season, 36 points in 24 playoff games, Malkin won the SC MVP Conn Smythe, and Pens won the Stanley Cup -- all in the season (/months) before signing that new contract.

Matthews? 73 points in 68 games, and a first round exit in playoffs.

Do you really think those are comparable situations?

I gotta agree with Max on this one fellas.

Give Matthews some time before comparing him to Malkin.

There's a different set of rules for Leafs cap situation than any other team in seems. To this point we have fans like Flyer fans laughing at how bad the Leafs cap is.

So we're giving Dubas no credit? How do you know he had nothing to do with Mikeyev?

And Lehtonen is a huge signing.

- RogerRoeper

this is quite public knowledge since Mikheyev and his agent were very explicit on the the biggest reason for Mikheyev to chose Leafs instead of other teams was Babcock. Babcock established the relationship with Mikheyev after seeing him play in 2018 World Championships.

On the addition of Mikheyev, whose contract is for US$925,000 including a signing bonus, Dubas credited the work done by Leafs senior director of player evaluation Jim Paliafito, but did not mention Babcock. But if Mikheyev had the idea that Babcock was going to be gone, he might have been more inclined to sign with another team.

MIke Babcock established the relationship the Leafs had with Ilya Mikheyev and Pavel Datsyuk had a hand in convincing Mikheyev that he will want to play for Babcock. ... So that's interesting. Story upcoming.

So many players benefited from playing under Babs because he rewards guys who play the right way, and he’s actually a brilliant coach.

But Keefe plays music at practice, soo 🤷‍♂️

I'm thinking he signs for 8.5-9M.

Hedman is better but Hedman doesn't sign for 8M if he hit the open market today...

- mjones242

Tampa got a steal on Hedman. At this point in their respective careers, Hedman is better than Karlsson and worth more money.

And yet you won't go into such detail to bring up Tavares' remarks about why he joined the Leafs

It’s not that bad of a deal.

Lou turned the Islanders around, but go on about him not being a good GM.

Lou (like Malkin) has the accolades. Dubas, Keefe, AM/MM/WN do not.

Tampa has done a pretty good job of locking up their core guys before they hit UFA. Stamkos was a scare, but that worked out well in the end. Given the off-ice advantages to living/playing in Florida, nobody expected Hedman to hit the open market.

I had to hear for a year taht Nylander's deal was so bad and Dubas got "Bent Over". Why the double standard? You don't give a guy 7 years after 1 NHL season. It is worse than any contract Dubas has ever given out.

Islanders are in a bad place. If you think Leafs have cap issues, please look at the mess in Long Island.

Potential to win a SC with your hometown team, while playing for one of the best coaches in the league, while signing a 77mln USD contract?

You are really kidding yourself if you think that a ppt presentation by Dubas had any gamechanging impact on Tavares' decision.

(please remind me - did you share a photo of a younger Tavares sleeping under Leafs bedsheets, or did he share a picture of a poster of Dubas on his wall?)

It's just funny that you refuse to put anything into Tavares remarks yet Mikeyev's are gospel

The Bedsheets are so irrelevant. Do you know how many kids had bedsheets or other items of their local team taht are in the NHL now.
