I am not a fan of giving Pietrangelo 7 years and a big contract at all. it's dumb - RogerRoeper
I wonder how much he'll get. With the cap bound to "freeze" for a few years, there might be some pretty interesting deals to be made with this class of UFAs.

I think UFAs will probably go for shorter deals. They might have to. - RogerRoeper
Welcome to Toronto, Taylor Hall
Give him a 1 or 2 year deal and Canadian tire |

This says it all. lou is far worse than Dubas at contracts and Islanders are in just the worst cap pickle.
Why give all your 4th liners 3 million+ per? Do people realize that's worse than any contract Dubas has given out? |

I wouldn't either. That sounds like a recipe for regret.
Unfortunately, UFA RHD are in shorter supply than N95 masks.

It's a bad time to be a UFA or an agent. Any GM handing out max contracts in this climate should have his head examined. Guys who signed big-ass deals right before the pandemic are laughing all the way to the bank.

Pretty sure Hall regrets not taking that big offer from the Devils now.
He'll get significantly less this... well I was gonna say summer but.... whenever he gets to sign a new contract. |

So that makes him better at the cap? Dubas went as far as Lou did with taht same Leafs team in his first year.
Sorry, but the "Hasn't won a series" won't convince me that the Islanders are in cap hell and cannot get better. Leafs? Oh yeah. They have that elite core. |

Yeah he had an 8 year deal wrapped up. I understand he wanted to win, but the Devils due have a core to compete asap |

For the cost of one Pietroangelo, you could get Shattenkirk, Gudas, and have money leftover. - GalacticStone
Correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't Shattenkirk indicated he doesn't want to play in Canada? |

Tampa has done a pretty good job of locking up their core guys before they hit UFA. Stamkos was a scare, but that worked out well in the end. Given the off-ice advantages to living/playing in Florida, nobody expected Hedman to hit the open market. - GalacticStone
Brayden Point will be interesting.
There were plenty of Leafs fans who wanted to see at least Marner get a bridge deal.
IIRC, Point gets $9 million in year 3, so that's the bare minimum on his next contract (he'll still be an RFA).
It may become a problem for Tampa, but it's still a very, very nice problem to have. |

I don't recall. He might have said that. If so, then he's nuts and that explains the lack of Shatty chatter in the Canadian press.
Shatty Chatter - it sounds like slang for something.

Point's contract is going to be astronomical, but maybe the pandemic will put a damper on that.
But yeah, it's a nice problem to have.
People who female dog about "cap hell" are jealous. With a good GM, cap hell means you are spending to the ceiling and doing it well enough to have worries about it. If that makes sense.

Muzzin - Kerfoot - Johnsson aren't great contracts.
And the Matthews contract is the most player-friendly contract ever signed in NHL in salary cap era.
That's a friggin brutal contract considering the fact that Matthews gets a top-dollar (AAV) contract while not giving up any of his UFA years.
By far the Matthews contract is worst of Dubas' negotiating - and it confirms a trend that he is not great (yet?) at getting team-friendly deals for younger players. - MaximusAurelius
Matthews is going to walk as soon as he can, no question.
A team like Az or Mtl were going to offer him something like a max deal. Matthews held all the cards.

Because he hates Toronto!!! He desperately wants to sign with his hometown team who hasn't made the playoffs in 8 years, has the lowest operational budget in the NHl and can never win and may moev to Houston.
Seriously buddy. Leafs will have a year to offer Matthews a massive deal. He won't be able to turn it down. How many do?
Tavres and Matthews will be in polar opposite siruation when he's UFA. |

So Leafs offer Matthews a massive record breaking 8 year deal in 4 years a full 12 months before UFA but he turns it down...
Remember, if the Leafs were in the same sitaution as the Coyotess Tavraes would not have even granted Toronto an interview...
Matthews knows how good he has it. The $$$ and chance to win is in Toronto. |
