Because he hates Toronto!!! He desperately wants to sign with his hometown team who hasn't made the playoffs in 8 years, has the lowest operational budget in the NHl and can never win and may moev to Houston.

Seriously buddy. Leafs will have a year to offer Matthews a massive deal. He won't be able to turn it down. How many do?

Tavres and Matthews will be in polar opposite siruation when he's UFA.

Matthews doesn't strike me as a guy that would not look at other teams.
If I'd be Matthews, I'd definitely look at NYR for example, or a team in a town with better climate - in particular if you win a SC with Leafs before end of his contract.
Marner and Matthews are really not the same from that perspective.

As much as it is a real option for McDavid to potentially join the Leafs after his current contract runs out, the same can be said for Matthews to look at other options in 2024.

Coyotees are a terrible, terrible franchise to join. There are tons of NHl players from Toronto who grew up Leaf fans who would have never, ever considered playing for them in the 80's and parts of the 90's. (Dave Poulin is a good example as he has mentioned).

These negatives against the Coyotees don't matter though. It's all about how much the Leafs suck.

I'm not comvined after COVID there will be an Arizona Coyotees when Matthews is UFA

Rangers look to be in cap hell FYI. Or do we not do that for other franchises? Panarin will be 32 when Matthews is UFA and making over 11 million per...

Point's contract is going to be astronomical, but maybe the pandemic will put a damper on that.

But yeah, it's a nice problem to have.

People who female dog about "cap hell" are jealous. With a good GM, cap hell means you are spending to the ceiling and doing it well enough to have worries about it. If that makes sense.

Slightly off-topic, but many moons ago (probably 2002 or 2003) my wife and I attended a Yankees-Bosox game at Fenway.

Keep in mind, this was before they broke the curse of the Bambino, so Bosox fans had a major inferiority complex.

We were sitting in the bleachers, and there was quite a bit of back and forth between the Yankees and Bosox fans (a few fights towards the end, as the effects of too much beer in the sun became evident).

Anyhoo, a Yankees fan in front of us was highlighting the fact that the Yankees win World Series all the time, and the Bosox hadn't won since 1918 .

The Bosox fan said, "Yeah, all your team does is buy championships! You just win because you spend the most money!"

To which the Yankees fan replied, "Yes, our owner makes a lot of money, and he spends it so the team can win. Isn't that how it should be? You want me to apologize because our owner spends more money than yours because he wants to win more?"

I'll never forget the body language on the poor bastard Bosox fan. He slumped in his seat, and said nothing for a long time.

The fans essentially buy the team. I am not sure I have a problem with that.

Yes.

I mentioned Az as team that could have made the offersheet and would be highly motivated to do so. This is not the same as where he is going to go when he hits UFA. I don't even bother to speculate on that, because he has his choice pretty much and it won't be a Canadian team.

i'm speaking in general. Matthews is seen by many as a guy desperate to leave Toronto to go home. It's been talked about so much, including in the media.

I find it funny how Toronto needs to be so good to sign anyone, but Coyotees, well it doesn't matter...

0 cap. No NHl playoffs since 2012. A core that still despite so many high picks doesn't look that good and as per Forbes lost 50 million in 1 year BEFORE COVID.

Sign me up!!!

Leafs are filthy rich. Make the playoffs every year. Have a great core. Tops in operational budget and of course are goimng nowhere.

EVERYONE WANTS OUT!!! Marner is hopping on a plane to sign a deal to get the hell out Tooronto

Leafs fans need to accept that if Tavares turned down the Islanders to come play for the team he grew up idolizing, other Leafs players may want to leave when they hit UFA status, for whatever reason.

It's a business.

Owners treat the players like commodities.

Don't fault the players for also taking a business-like approach.

I have no idea what Matthews will do. Nobody does. Hell, I doubt Matthews does at this point.

But yes, there is a possibility that he may want to leave Toronto when he becomes a UFA. To suggest otherwise is silly.

you fail to understand that the statement:

"Coyotes might offer a 7y x 14.34mln AAV offersheet to Matthews if he hits the RFA market"

is not the same as

"Matthews is looking to sign a contract with the Coyotes whenever he gets the chance to do so".
