I get why fans here wanted Lou to stay. They actually think it is a good idea to have Pageau, Komorov Martin, Clutterbuck ETC on the team. Cap hit with those guys is irrelevant I guess. Nylander makes 6.9!!! - RogerRoeper
Maybe switch gears away from Nylander convo’s just for a bit, bud. |

The Leafs need to make the $81.5m cap over the next two seasons. They have some rebuild on the back end, including signing a couple of key UFA's. They also need to set themselves up to deal with the Seattle expansion.
I assume it means a major deal will be done at the end of playoffs, around the draft and before the start of the 2020-21 season.
I have absolutely no feel for how this gets done. I think Nylander is a really good contract for the Leafs. I do not see him as the easy solution and the obvious odd man out. Rielly deserves Chabot type money ($8m x 8). Andersen should get $6.5 to $7.0m.
Can the Leafs get this done without moving a $10m contract?
Is Marner the moving part? What would be the expected return?
Does Dubas start checking out the Coyote lottery odds if the Leafs have a weak playoff start against Tortarella (a very good playoff coach) and Matthews is a playoff no show once again?

Matthews was great in the playoffs last year. What are you talking about? He had 5 goals, 6 points in 7 games. He also has 10 goals in 20 playoff games in his career.
Andersen won't be kept. it's a waste of money. He's in his 30's. You don't give along-term deal to a guy who's won nothing.
While opposing fans will be so excited LLeafs will trade a Marner or Matthews, it'll be an Andreas Jonson or Kerfoot who gets moved.
And ALL teams have some cap concerns other than your broke-ass team. |

What team in the league can absorb a 10m contract? Not many.
You either get pennies on the dollar or you get equivalent dollars (not necessarily value/skill) back. |

Bottom line you don't trade 22 year-old superstars no matter what they are making.

The leafs are set up tremendously to deal with the cap crunch, we've already seen as much.
If you have to deal with the cap having (a) more money than any other team to make problems dissaprear and (b) a guy on staff that litterally wrote the cba is a big help.
Leafs are the only team that can say that. They will navigate the cap just fine |

I love how opposing fans act like the Leafs have a 81.5 cap, while the rest of the NHL is at 90 million.

At this point it is so stupid hearing the Leafs are in such dire cap situation compared to anyone else.
There are so many teams up against the cap+ there are going to be a lot of poorer teams that need to cut costs and won't have the budget they did a year ago. |

You'd think that after repeatedly seeing them correctly navigate the cba and cap that they'd eventually get the hint. |

Apparently, Dubas accidentally spent money on four top end offensive talents and is now stuck with them. |
