Ben what is he making in the KHL do you know? If so please tell me. I have heard it’s 1.5 mil per year on the last contract.
So your gonna pay a guy who hasn’t played an NHL game 5 million? No way, sorry. Kids talented for sure but your not gonna break the bank to bribe him here. - nyisles7
I don't know how much Sorokin was making on his KHL contract.
As for whether the Isles will be paying him $4-5M, I don't see anything that would say otherwise.
Nikita Gusev and Vadim Shipachyov are clear examples of KHL players in the last few years who came to North America and signed identical $4.5M x 2 year deals without having played an NHL game. Evgenii Dadonov went back to the KHL for five years after having minimal NHL success and then came back and signed a $4M x 3 year deal.
What would make Sorokin's situation any different so that he'd be taking less?

Why don’t we just see what Sorokin gets if in fact he signs here. The Islanders have a starting goalie signed for 4 more years and Sorokin is an RFA so they are in a lot better place than the Devils when they were trying to get Gusev ( who’s numbers are Pageau like but he’s minus 16 ) to sign with them after they traded a 2nd and a 3rd round pick for him. The Devils weren’t tearing up the league and weren’t a real desirable place to sign. On top of that The Devils had and have plenty Cap space
( even after signing PK for 9 M per )not to mention the Cap was going up this coming year before this pandemic. Way different scenario then the Islanders with Sorokin.
He’s not getting 5 million per year. Time will tell again if in fact he signs here.
Vadim Shipachyov Was just an absolute mistake and the reason why you don’t give non NHL proven players a big contract. |

Gusev and Vadim Shipachyov were older and past the need for an ELC, right? I believe 27 yrs negates the ELC requirement. Sorokin is 24 and will have to sign an ELC. That's leverage for Lou. Also, as a defected player, there isn't an expiration date for the Isles rights to him. That's all leverage. Why give a year away and sign him now when they can't play him?
The Isles are in the drivers seat because Sorokin has to go thru them to enter the NHL. |

After burning the year 1 ELC, that would make him an RFA, correct? Aren't there parameters for what RFA's can potentially sign for? Would a team Offer Sheet him? Lou's gonna earn his money this off season for sure. - NYIFan4Life
Nope. See McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Marner, etc.. they can sign for whatever you want to pay them. Waivers and years to ufa are unaffected, though. |

Not a NYI fan but big fan of goalies in general - so, I’ve been watching Sorokin for a while in anticipation of his NHL career.
I think Mikko Koskinen is a better comp for expected salary as he made the KHL to NHL move recently (184 Gp, .926 save, 1.99 GAA).
Yes, he was older, less hype and had worse KHL stats, but I think it shows where Sorokin value probably could be.
Either way, EDM gave 1 x 2.5M as a “show me” deal, and then extended 3 x $4.5M. The big difference is his age and ceiling though in terms of the second deal.
I’d see NYI aiming for a 2-3 x 2.5/3M. Longer terms gets a bit more salary. Sorokin might be unproven in the NHL, but he has 8 (5 as starter and all 5 a KHL all star with many league leading stats or weekly/monthly awards) KHL seasons with a .930 save and 1.7 GAA in 244 GP (remove his first three years with Metallurg and around 60 GP and his stats are even stronger) - so he’s not nearly as “green” in terms of being a pro.
If this kid is as good as they say (some saying generational goalie talent on Price/Vasy level), and becomes a FA at 26/27, he will want a lot of money.
It’s better to slightly overpay now for more term to get what appears to be an elite goalie for longer before next negotiation. Esp. bc Varlamov is on a friendly term/cost deal.
Even at $3Mish for Sorokin, you’ve still only got around $8Mish (Less than 10% cap) into two goalies, which isn’t that bad for a 1A/1B tandem - esp. if Sorokin hits his ceiling.
Getting Sorokin on a 3 year deal allows NYI to take money from Varlamov deal expiring the same offseason (summer ‘23) and then adding it to Sorokin if he’s proven himself to be a $8-10M goalie.
I don’t think he gets the $4-5M, but if term is short enough, I’d see him onboard for $2.5-3 if it’s a 2-3 yr “show me” deal. |

I love the non-stop "the sky is falling" from all the Salary Cap people. Every single year we hear this nonsense and every single year the Islanders are NEVER near the cap limit. They have plenty of Cap room right now and have plenty more coming off the cap this year and in years following.
IF and i mean IF They ever get close to the cap they will make a cap move like every other team does... but as I am typing they are 19th on the list of NHL teams with Cap room... https://www.capfriendly.com/ They have Martin 2.5, Brassard 1.2, Kuhnackl 850k, Greene 5mill, and Greiss 3.3 mill coming off the cap.
if you sign Barzal long term and the rest to Bridge deals they have plenty of cap room. then after the bridge deals you have lots of other guys coming off in a couple of years. 2 years from now they have over 25 mill coming off in boychuk, Leddy, Clutterbuck, Leo, Casey, and hickey.
They are friggin Fine.. and Pageau is a great sign.. fyi!!

I don't think that pointing out that the Isles are going to face a bit of a cap crunch is saying "the sky is falling".
All those guys you listed that are coming off the cap will barely cover Barzal's contract alone, then you still need to sign Sorokin (or another goalie), Pulock, and Toews. You could potentially be looking at close to, if not more than, $20M in added money from Barzal/Sorokin/Pulock/Toews with less than $13M coming off the cap.
All of the rest of that money coming off the cap down the line still has to be replaced with NHL-level talent. Maybe Wahlstrom/Bellows/etc... can fill some of that void but there's no guarantee they'll be viable options and I think we can all agree that the current management/coaching regime clearly favors veteran players to young guys. The next offseason after this one you're looking at having to re-sign Pelech and Beau, which won't be super-cheap either.
There are certainly options, mainly trying to trade Leddy and/or Bailey at some point, to free up room but nothing is a guarantee and then you're just creating another roster hole that you're hoping can be filled by cheap young guys. They better hope Wahlstrom and Bellows turn out to be genuine NHL scorers because if not they're going to be in a tough spot up front. |

There isn’t a decent team in the league that doesn’t face Cap constraints. That’s why one was implemented.
The fact is with the Covid19 pandemic causing a cap freeze makes it even worse. Every GM in
the NHL was under the impression that the cap was going up this year. That said the Islanders are in far better shape than most.
Question, what do you feel Barzal, Pulock and Toews get as contracts? Term and amount? |

Pure speculation?
Barzal: $8.5M x 4
Pulock: $6.5M x 6 OR $5M x 2 (if he wants to burn the last two years of his RFA status and be a UFA at 27)
Toews: $4M x 2-3 years
Maybe give-or-take 500k on all of those. Not 100% confident on those predictions because the pandemic and flat-cap with no compliance buyouts are going to complicate matters for sure. |

Islanders sign Sorokin to his ELC so that they keep him here and have his rights set. If I am Lou I offer a two year bridge deal at 2.5 mil. If he proves he is the real deal in NHL he gets a big payday in two years. By then Varly is the backup. |

I’d say you’re pretty much in the ballpark with your predictions. Except for Toews. I doubt he gets more than 3 per on any bridge deal.
