“Brassard centers checking line. He didn't work out on a scoring line (which is why we got Pageau), so let him check.”
Was this a joke or did you not watch Brassard play ever? |

Serious question why do you hate Pageau so much? I think he checked many of the boxes that the Islanders were looking for in a 2/3 C which they were light on.
He can play the PP, PK and is good on both sides of the puck and wins face offs.
With Casey breaking down and Brassard not coming close to Filly’s numbers or effectiveness down the middle I think Pageau’s signing solidifies the Islanders hole down the middle the Isles have had since Franz left. |

I think Pags is a fine center. I never said otherwise.
Casey will suffer fewer injuries if he switches from a physical role to a skill role. He wins faceoffs, skates well, sees the ice well and has an excellent wristshot. Didn't he score 20 last year? Playing on the checking line? Scoring 20 goals and just 13 assists should tell you he will do better when hes centering goal scorers. You know, someone to pass to and all that.

Meh, Casey is fine where Casey is. That 4th line when healthy and together are the identity of the Isles. Having JGP let’s him do his job and Barzal and Nelson do theirs as well. He has solidified the team down the middle. They have been light down the middle since JT and Franz left and they needed a legit 2/3 center imho. In today’s NHL you need 4 effective lines to win. |

So we only disagree one 1 thing. You feel Pageau was worth the picks and cap issues over the next 2 years, and I don't. Cap issues often mean we lose a valuable player we want. It wont be Pag, because he comes with a 2 year no movement.
I sure hope Lou has some big tricks up his sleeve to make the next 2 years work.

An outlier season where he scored 20 goals does not make him a "20 goal scorer" or someone that should be thrown into a skill role. He's a fourth line center, nothing more. And one that should be let go when his contract is up. |

20 in 73 games is pretty good for just a 4th liner. 10 in 48 this year isn't too bad either. All this from a 5' 11", 195 pound guy put in a check first role, which leads to injuries.
This year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L208p3a4sPY
The guy is a goal scorer.
But I'm a guy who thinks Martin would have had a much better career as a defenseman.

It was a good season for him, no doubt. I'm just saying the fact that it happened doesn't all the sudden make him some sort of viable scoring center.
He's also not exactly drawing the big defensive matchups from other teams. Put him on a skill line and he'll prove that he's nothing more than a fourth liner. A good fourth liner, but that's about it. I can't possibly imagine that if the Islanders, a team that can't score as it is, thought he was a legitimate offensive talent that they wouldn't have rotated him in with the skill lines at some point. |

IMO, Trotz puts too much importance on the 'identity' line. I can't imagine any other coach in the league sitting Johnston in favor of Martin. It's just weird as hell.
Some players take a bit longer to find their offense. Casey's offense has been showing up the last 2 seasons. He isn't as good as Pageau, who I think is a solid addition. It's just the price and cap I'm worried about. If the Islanders need to give up prospect and more picks to move money contracts, it could spell some very rough years in our future. |

Cizikas. Brassard centers checking line. He didn't work out on a scoring line (which is why we got Pageau), so let him check. I think once Cizikas adjusts to playmaking rather than checking, he could be almost as good as Pageau was last year.
Pageau is a better center, but we're talking about cap and lost draft picks to get him. - Puckin_Island
Pageau is an excellent 2 way Center who's game translates Perfectly for Trotz system. |

Being able to roll all 4 lines equally and being able to play them against any of the opponent's line is a huge advantage. That 4th line when healthy is able to match up with any line and usually brings a ton of energy into the team. They are a tone setter which is why they often are starting line for Trotz.

For me it depends on where Otto is in his development and also the term and price Casey needs / wants. |

He'd almost certainly have to take a very team-friendly deal. He's already making $3.35M. If the cap is still stagnate then I can't fathom how they'd be able to give him a raise. Or even the same AAV. Maybe he wants to keep his family on LI and/or be here for the new arena and he does take a paycut....but it'll be his last "big" (relatively speaking) contract of his career so I'm not so sure that'll interest him. |
