I've been told there's always a better outside hire for those positions.

So then the question is how does that fit into the cap for the forwards going forward?

Jack at 10
Skinner at 9
Samson at 7 ish
Boser at 7.5 ish
Olo at ? 3? 4? 5?
2c at. ?

$37.5 in the top 6 without counting a 2c

Does that work?!?

- Gr8daygo

I think that Gofrani's blog gives very good insight into the impact of such a move.
In his blog he laid out a roster with the associated Cap that totalled ~$76m; which did not contemplate adding a player with a Cap hit of $7.5m on the wing and had already factored in moving Risto and Montour.

In order to make it fit then, other casualties would need to occur like Mojo's $4.5m and Kahun's $2.5m; or Sam's projected $7.0m contracts

To be fair, the $7.5M would hit after the next 2 seasons, when Johansson would be gone, and if Kahun is the goods, he might be as well due to cap reasons.

It's tough to keep all good or great forwards unless you go super minimal on defense and goaltending, which advanced stats has been moving towards as a mentality for the past year or so.

His cap hit would only be 5.9 for 2 more years, Mojo won't be here when his 7.5 mill qualifying offer would have to be made, Miller if not resigned would be gone, McCabe might be gone. Depending on what it took to get him, probably better options out there, but he’s a good player.

It does if Cozens, Mittelstadt, or perhaps Rossi/Lundell give us quality production at the Center ice production at cheap cost.

From Mirtle's article on The Athletic concerning the financial implications of the new CBA and the way the owners are funding the players' shortfall in sharing 50/50 of dramatically decreasing revenues over the next several seasons ...

You wonder what the implications of that could mean for competitive balance. If you’re a team in a weaker NHL market, and you don’t have ticket revenues to rely on, will you spend anywhere close to the cap? Will there be greatly increased downward pressure on salaries, in that environment, and salary spending more in line with revenues? Will we have a lot more teams near the floor instead of the cap?

Hmmmm, interesting to see where the Pegula's will be. If they are losing $30m the last few seasons (each), is it reasonable to expect them to increase those losses further...or do they create an internal budget that is more toward the floor ~$60m or mid-point (~$71m) to try to stem the losses.

Keep in mind, Mirtle's article referenced Revenues could drop from forecasted $4.8B down to into the $2.5 billion range, without fans in attendance, based on how high a percentage of hockey-related revenue comes from in-arena sources (tickets, concessions, etc.).

Those are worse case scenarios based on '20-'21 season without fans, which I highly doubt would happen...but could we see low attendance with limits of 25%, 50% capacity for awhile? Definitely possible. I certainly could foresee them going the internal budget route..and under these conditions I couldn't blame them.

Also have to figure in Risto or Montour’s cap hit moving out as well since one of them would be included I would hope.

If not one or both could be traded for futures and I wouldn’t bat any eyelash

boesser has 6 more goals in the last 3 years then craig smith

smith would not cost any assets

while I agree they need to turnover a chunk of the roster, I think they could move that 1 or 2 RD guys, or prospects/picks to get other needs

LD and a center

Correct on the $5.9m initially...but with multiyear contracts, the probability of significant revenue shortfalls from the pandemic (see post above), even that $5.9m addition would require at least the Mojo or Kahun move if we subscribe to Gofrani's model. Merely doing Kahun and saving his projected $2.5m would put them tight against the Cap.

say you sign boesser to 7 mil long term
reinhart 7 mil long term
oloffson 5 mil long term

and skinners 9 mil

that's 28 mil for your top 6 wingers

plus you have the okposo anchor on the bottom 6

not a good blueprint

build down the middle with centers and your top 4 d men

we still IMO need a number 1 Rd
a number 2 LD
and perhaps 3 centers if Larsson walks

I understand, but disagree.
They would need to make a move of some sort this season to fit in his $5.9m

Those moves you speak of will require backfills as well somewhere down the line.
Keep in mind, Gofrani already had 7 players on ELC's or VetMin contracts...so there is already heavy dependence on those...and would likely need to increase in the future.
As you know and agree with, it is a prime reason why trading the 8th pick isn't smart unless you get back a player on an ELC

If they don't move at least one of, if not both of Ristolainen and Montour, they're not doing a good job.

Boeser much more positively impacts the team going forward than either of Ristolainen or Montour.

Yup, if the 8-OA slides in at 2C then the Sabres could take on that contract...as that would save $5m in Gofrani's model. Cozens is already contemplated at 3RW on an ELC.
(Of course it works the same if Cozens and the 8-OA swap as well)

In Gofrani's model, Montour and Risto were already moved.
No there were $5m and $2m placeholders for Dahlin and Joker deals planned for the following season, so they could absorb it for next season, but then that would require the move next offseason. And keep them up against the Cap again.

Could it be done? Yes.
Are there more efficient options ... I would hope so.

Yes to keep his rights, so is he a player worth getting for atleast 2 more years at 5.9 mill. Will he grow, can he finally stay healthy. He's a 55pt player know, he's basically a Rhino, with a injury problem.
- Buff36

Why do you guys keep comparing him to rhino he's a sniper like vanek probably would have had 40 -50 goals in 2017 you all want Holtz hes the same type ..

I love Boeser he be a total stud here

Your analysis is pretty much in line with my thoughts as well.

There is alot if "could they" rather than "should they" make these moves IMO.

Gofrani's blog did a very nice job of illustrating the issues...
-No big additions except at 2C for $5m,
-heavy reliance on ELC/VetMin contracts to round out the roster
-having factored in trades of Montour and Miller...and they would still be pressed against the cap.
-planning for Dahlin and Joker new contracts.

I am not sure people have evaluated that fully here.

I think you’re spot on here.

Only difference is that Boeser already has an established defensive game whereas Holtz is a bit of an unknown there.

That is a very good possibility.

Personally I would still swing at Lundell/Rossi if they are there though.

Can never have enough Centers.

Cause right know that is who he is, he doesn't exactly play with slouches over there with the Canucks. He's injury prone and could be a 40 goal scorer if he stayed healthy. But he has basically done what Rhino has the last 3 years
