Trade him now and youll get a lot more.
- RogerRoeper

I hear you — and I’m not one to speculate what they could have gotten then vs. now (maybe Garnie is right and Douggie Hamilton was tabled, who knows).

I just think if your hands are tied and you’re going to move a star player, it makes sense to move the one that will provide more cap flexibility and bring back a better defenseman, even if it means losing a special talent in Marner.

If you trade Marner you still have Nylander Kapanen and Mikeheyv down the right side. Maybe finally give Bracco a look. That’s not at all terrible if it means you can add a top pairing RHD and free up enough cap to keep Rielly and Hyman and not be reliant on Scrubs playing meaningful minutes on league minimum contracts

In hindsight - Ya, bad trade.

Kadri would be great to have on that contract. We should probably start holding onto our good contracts rather than trade them all away.

But he is our 3rd line C and getting suspended twice you can't excuse.

I know.

I was all for trading him after that happened two playoffs in a row.

But he certainly had value at that contract.

Sorry to say but all the research and the most sophisticated medical system in the world are going to be as useful as curing cancer with leeches if you don’t have a political structure that can generate social support for going more than four weeks without haircuts.

Hard to justify paying Kadri 4.5M as a 3C. Barrie with retained salary seemed like a decent enough gamble at the time. It didn't work out as intended. Meh.

I do lay partial blame on Babcock's colossal misuse of Barrie for the first 20 games of the season. Babcock's Achilles Heel has always been his stubborn refusal to deviate from his carefully laid plans. Good coaches can pivot from their mistakes - Babs doubled down on them.

I do think the numbers indicate his play is slipping as well.

Yeah Babs saying "Stick to the plan and keep grinding" was just terrible to hear. He was coaching them a way they were not built for. It was a terrible fit.

With Barrie plays great in the playoffs we might look at the trdae differently

Everyone better get used to masks, distancing, increased disinfection, UV lamps in businesses, etc.

Covid is just the first shot across the bow. Mother Nature is pissed. You should read about the poop coming out of the permafrost as it melts. Viruses mankind has never seen before and that we have no immunity to and no body of research on. Novel Covid-19 was "new", but at least we had a body of research on related coronaviruses to build on. The next time, something like a "Caveman Flu" or "Pleistocene Fever" could come out of the permafrost and we are all phucked. And that permafrost is continuing to melt with no end in sight until it's all gone, releasing it's trapped cargo of viruses and methane.

Good times ahead. Pack your poop and fasten your seat belts.

- GalacticStone

I'm less concerned about potential prehistoric viruses than I am about the methane that is being released from the permafrost regions in the Arctic that will only exacerbate (and that's putting it lightly) our Global Warming problem.

Having said that, I'm not so sure COVID-19 was necessarily a Mother Nature invention. So there's always that angle to think about too...

True. I haven't really kept track of his play since he went to Colorado.

I'm not entirely convinced either. It's possible that Mother Nature got a primary assist from some governmental/military entity. I don't lean towards conspiratorial thinking (never do), but this bears some consideration.

It would also be great if we could stop eating bats, pangolins, possums, wombats, lemurs, flying squirrels, or anything else that common sense should dictate as a hard NO.

Trading Marner would be so Leafy. Maybe the Leafiest move ever.

Just don't take any calls from Steve Yzerman. That guy will hypontize you into taking a bag of magic beans for him.

No, that would be trading Matthews for Joe Thornton

There’s no doubt that a flat cap will hurt the Leafs more than some other teams since we have zero room. On the other hand it really helps that there are no bad contracts in the way.

I wonder if they can use their financial muscle somehow. There are franchises in really bad shape right now that are going to be in worse shape over the next while.

- Canada Cup

Kapanen is only owed 4 million in his final 2 years

Kerfoot is only owed 8 million in his final 3 years

Johnnson is only owed 7.5 million in his final 3 years

I think these contracts are worth gold to a lot of teams right now

Kapanen's is (frank)ing money for any team that is going to struggle financially

Which is why front loading the contracts was a good move for a cash rich team like the Leafs.

What are the rules Re: sign and trades? Could we theoretically sign a player, pay their signing bonus, and immediately trade them? Could offer the leafs the ability to buy themselves some assets.

They used to say about Harry Sinden that he would steal the eyes out of your head and then convince you that you looked better without them.
