The Hockey guy had a really good breakdown of this on his channel yesterday.
- DrunkenCanuck

Wish I heard it. I do think it's not talked about but is a major issue. Reports were Florida had to cut 10 million from their payroll BEFORE COVID hit.

This idea every team will be able to hit that same number again I doubt is possible.

True story - marijuana was banned in the US based on racist (and business/personal career) motives.
- MaximusAurelius

That's the basis for all policies in the US.

You Tube it, all his vids are there. Non biased NHL reporting daily. It’s funny to see a guy in his basement offer better content than TSN or SN.

Funny thing is, I still get the eebie jeebies even though it's legal. And not just around cops, even just people out and about. Hard to shake 35 years of paranoid muscle memory.

Same here. Then I remember that I am a straight white male and the fear recedes. I am a jolly white giant and the nation is my oyster. I can do no wrong.

how many times can you post this same exact point - presented in a way as if it were the first time???
- MaximusAurelius

Some truths bear repeating.

Interesting article from Mirtle today in the Athletic on how the frozen cap affects the Leafs. Sounds like next year is fine, and then it gets sticky.

I don't think it's going to be as bad as some predict. The idea that another team is going to offer Rielly a mega-contract ignores the fact that all teams are going to be in similar cap crunch situations.

I think the new reality is that guys with existing contracts are damn lucky, and guys like Hyman are going to have to accept lower salary contracts for the next four years.

That works well. Hyman wants to be a Maple Leaf

They will be able to get under 81.5 mln next year retaining all the high paid players but it involves some pretty aggressive assumptions (i put together a cap compliant 23 man roster but it assumes a bunch of marlies making the jump full time (liljegren, sandin, maybe a robertson or abramov) and Spezza coming back for another league minimum contract. Worth noting that the right side on defence on that team was Dermott (playing on opposite side), Holl and Liljegren. The numbers don’t work at all the following year and it leaves no wiggle room to re-up Rielly, Freddy (if they still go that route) or Hyman at an increased cap hit.

I think the solution is to try and trade Marner for a top pairing RHD. I’d prefer to trade Nylander as a player but it makes more sense from a cap perspective to ditch Mitch the greedy female dog

I think it won't excite viewers like the lazy narrative that the Leafs are just in the worst cap hell and every team will be fine other than them.

I never want Marner moved. You do not trade elite young talent. You can get a RHD without moving him.

The new CBA clearly states that the Leafs have to operate with a $10 million cap penalty and they also have to transfer more money to Arizona and Bettman hates Canada and 1967 and Dubas caved.

Frozen salary cap for the next three years.

If you have any ideas on how we get this RHD, we are all ears.

Because you are only thinking of a high priced star. they don't need that to win a cup. They are a major cup contende this summer.

Love the Toronto media. All I'm hearing is what a disaster Leafs rebuild is and how they really don't have a chance against th Blue Jackets. There's no media like it.
- RogerRoeper

So everyone in the toronto media is saying this, or 1 or 2 people?

Where are you watching/reading this?

I haven't been watching sports channel's much but I haven't seen't anything on the computer along those lines, except from the clown that thinks Kevin Hayes has a good contract.

- GreatGigInTheSky

He likes to dump on toronto media, it was probably one article he read.

Kevin Hayes a good contract. ROTFL. magine the feeling if Dubas signed that. 1 50 point season by age 28 and he gets 7 years, 7.15 per...

Dubas got destroyed for signing a 22 year-old that never had less than 61 points in a full season for his prime years at 6.9

- RogerRoeper

Yes we get it.
I think youve posted at length about this.

He is really good. He is able to simply tell facts without worrying about how to create headlines to get viewers like those TSN/Sn guys.

The team doesnt haven to offer rielly a mega contract to outbid the leafs though. Just a million more per year over 4 to 5 years and the leafs could be screwed. Their cap is that tight while some other teams arent as much.
