Got that right. Consider a blueline with these prospects:
Carlsson - Boqvist
Beaudin - Mitchell
Krys - Regula
Demin, Kalynuk, Moberg, Vlasic
Versus these past prospects:
Barker - Johns
Olsen - Clendening
Dahlbeck - Holl
Danis-Pepin, Fournier, Lalonde, Paliotta
A few of them turned out okay but wouldn't want any of them over what we have today.
Johns is the only one in the group I would reconsider but he just came back from a devastating head injury.
Holl seems to be a late bloomer which is great in the grand scheme of wanting prospects to succeed somewhere. - AEL_Fox
I agree that this current crop of D prospects is something to be excited about, but it is comparing apples and oranges, really. These past prospects all turned out somehow already, and looking back, Barker and Olsen were also thought of highly (same can be said about Lalonde and Clendening to some degree) and even though they did not meet these expectations, they still managed to have some kind of NHL career.
Only Barker was and Boqvist can be considered to have Top 2 potential, IMO. Johns and Mitchell come with similar expectations at similar stage of their career. Besides that, I don't see much difference between expectations for Danis-Pepin and Vlasic, Olsen and Beaudin (although very different style), Dahlbeck and Carlsson, Clendening and Regula, Fournier and Krys etc.
We already know the latter group mostly failed, but judging by the law of averages, most of the current group will not make it either. They simply look promising and developing nicely now and there is a lot of them with that promise, so hopefully some will pan out, sooner or later. But do you see next Keith, Seabrook, Hammer or Makar, Hughes, McAvoy, even Hronek among them at this stage? We shall find out eventually. I root for them. But I had such high hopes for Barker and Johns and all the others too (Steve McCarthy comes to mind) |

Hmm not sure we have any "great" D or Forward prospects Dach is not enough I'll go for the "best player available." - rpeters01
I think if we pick 10th Askarov will be the best player available . |

Excellent post, stoney. You are right about the law of averages.
Another apples to oranges comparison factor is the AHL coaching staff. Colliton and now King have done a much better job developing prospects than Dent ever did.
That is also on point that many of the past prospects did eventually crack NHL lineups at varying levels of success.
Even if a majority of the current prospects develop well, they all won't make it in the Hawks organization due to space constraints or because other prospects matured quicker and leapfrogged them to the big club. |

Checking the internet some votes towards a Flyers victory vs Pittsburgh but mixed voting if they go farther.

Same number as they’ve won in the last 40 or so. Couldn’t happen to a better expansion franchise. |

I have a subscription to TheAthletic but can't locate Burnside's mailbag. I'm not surprised there won't be compliance buyouts but would still like to read what he has to say. Can you post a link please.

So the city of Seattle recently passed a law taxing companies that employ workers making over a $150K per year anywhere from 0.7 to 2.4%. (Government agencies exempt from the tax.) Assuming the Seattle franchise will have 20 plus players and numerous employees making over 150K, conservatively the total effected payroll will be over $80M. Figure 80M is at the 2.4% high end of the tax bracket, so the owner of the Seattle franchise just got hit with about a $2M expense for doing business there. |
