They don't really have the cap space for both IMO unless they move salary or one or both take team friendly deals. I don't think it's in the cards.

I like the strides JV has taken but I still think he has rocks for brains. I'd like a solid return but i'm not adverse to moving him.

- golfingsince

Can fit both of them under the cap. Tanev is the cap casualty. It’s possible all 3 would sign fair deals. To sign all 3 makes other moves necessary. Possible but at a price.

Term for TT is the unknown. Tanev I have no bead on. Marky I think will be no problem.

If they have to walk away from Toffoli, they have a cap problem.
- belcherbd

They will be compliant. Glass half full.

The Tanev situation is an odd one...

He says team friendly stuff & his agent contradicts him. Save the fee & be his own agent.

How much are you paying players? Marky 10 mil per?

Toffololi is an expired contract. Next year if Sutter walks away I guess we still have cap issues

Too bad the NHL isn't like the NFL and you can't just restructure contracts.
- NewYorkNuck

Not happening lol
I only dislike 7/8 year deals. Want to see 5/6 max. Restructuring brings up all sorts if issues that I wouldn’t want. Teams would find ways of circumventing the cap too easily. I also like to see signing bonuses % reduced eg Tavares type contracts.

I agree they don't have room for both, which is why they have a cap problem....

I can't see them going back to "rebuild" mode. Take advantage of having Boeser, Horvat, Miller, Pearson, Markstrom and Toffoli locked up the next couple of years and try to make some noise. Sucks to have to double down on the Eriksson mistake but I think it's the only way to take advantage of the quality players on the roster.

- belcherbd

Our top 6 or even 9 looks pretty good. Looking ahead it’s still healthy. Comes down to building a perennial PO roster working towards contending.

Ideas/thoughts on how we look now next year & the years to come?

There is no way you trade Brock Boeser just to make room to re-sign Tyler Toffoli.

He’s younger, better and an in-house developed asset.

You consider moving Boeser if you can get a young, cost-controlled, right-shot, top-4 defender who has top pairing upside.

Tanev played all season with Hughes in the line up and with a better improving team he's less likely to get injured stuck in his zone.

The depressed economy and revenue uncertainty plus flat fixed cap are going to make owners not want to spend. Especially those few teams with cap space that spend thrift reason existed before the Covid crisis.

GMs will be focusing on hanging on to their top RFA players. UFA's are going to be taking short term deals. Only big stars like Hall and AP will get fair offers.

Dead weight guys will be creatively removed from cap. Its the new reality and we'll be seeing more rookies brought in to team rosters.

The Canucks are poised to do well in this new reality. Better even in a couple years when recapture and buy outs are gone.

Sounds reasonable other than I’m no fan of Hall. He’s overrated & will be overpaid.

I like how this all started off a now-retracted rumor, and people have automatically jumped to the assumption it's just for cap room.

Lower salary with bonuses for games played.

If not a covid/e-draft contract...

3/3.5m add 500k for 60 games, another 500k for over 70 games.

Workable?

With this fan base it doesn't surprise me at all.

I would be shocked if they didn't flip out. They are not real fans

I agree. My problem is stating it’s Boeser gone so TT can resign. I prefer to not put in those terms. It comes down to who goes for what not twisting it into something else.

Agree with you on Hall but what I want and what I speculate on where things are going are separate. Like on the Cancuks I try to assess what they might be doing not what I want because that's irrelevant and wishes are for fairy tales.

Can remove BOESER & insert another player & it’s still a needed trade.
