sure, if there was a choice between a stud $8-10m d-man and JT, i'd totally agree with you.
JT was by far the biggest piece on the market and clearly wanted to play for them. i would have signed him without hesitation.
however, that team definitely has (had) enough quality pieces to trade for a solid $8-10m and haven't done so. the longer they have waited, the worse their cap situation has become and more desperate they seem. they'll have to overpay even more now.
so in my estimation, they could have had JT and a top end D-man. - RealityChecker
Well they did offer him the most money in the entire league at the time if i'm not mistaken. I'm sure that played a small part in it.
I agree, there were other paths to acquiring the dman instead but it became apparent rather quickly that they were up against the cap which impacts trade negotiations. |

They'll have their issues, the interesting part is how they solve them. - Marwood
It’s interesting, but it’s also their job. They will get it done one way or another. Other teams knowing isn’t going to help, but it’s literally what they are being paid to do. Definitely not a worry of mine. |

that's my understanding. someone who's more up to speed can fill in the blanks.
i'm wondering if he chooses not to sign, when does he become a UFA? where would he be allowed/eligible to play this coming season? if he chooses not to sign but signs elsewhere for this season (europe for example) will that affect his route to UFA?
can someone who's on top of the situation kindly lay out what his options are? - RealityChecker
He hasn’t signed his entry level contract yet. I believe only years played in ahl/nhl burn time toward ufa. But, if he waits until next year (im fairly sure it’s next year) he can become a ufa. I wonder if/when they will compensate teams after the first round for guys that wait it out? Seems more common than ever. |

that was something i was hoping would get fixed in the next CBA. i don't think it did which is saddening (on a league wide level not just for the rathbone situation.)
since there will be no college hockey for him, is he free to sign elsewhere (as in europe)? if he does that, how would that affect the canucks' rights over him?
(i don't think he'll sign in europe or anything. i just think this is an interesting situation with a lot of 'what ifs.') |

I asked that yesterday.. can't remember who replied that since the Canucks own his rights, they'd have to agree to lend him to one of those teams. However, the writing would be on the wall for his time with the Canucks, so they'd just be better off trading his rights. |

I think he has these 3 days to sign, if he does he cannot play in this tournament, if he declines the team can try again next year, and if he declines he would be a UFA.
But I'm going off reading something a while back, and not sure of the validity. |

my gut feeling is that he'll sign.
with no college hockey, i think signing with an nhl team will give him the closest thing to a guarantee that (if possible due to the pandemic), he'll have somewhere to play this coming season.
if he stays in college, he'd be scrambling to keep up training on an adequate level. this is a crucial time for his professional development so a step down in training for a year could be a scary thought. |

great teammate and gave it everything he had, but the guy is broken. He was barely able to keep himself together for the end of last season |

Concussions are a weird thing. Crosby's had a number and is still able to play. Everyone thought Baertschi was done.
Maybe Ferland will be able to continue to play. Let's hope so, for his health, he's past them all. Suppose this training camp will show us. |

Oh really? poop. Haven't seen that.
Let's hope it isn't concussion related then. They're not supposed to tell any injury details, so could also be COVID |

There are a few names missing, Joulevi, Lind, Rafferty, has it been announced Ferland is done, or a observation by Drance that he isn't there.

Has it been Concussions in Vancouver?
In Carolina it was a lingering back issue that kept flaring up really bad every time he hit somebody. |

didn't even think about the 3 AHL'ers mentioned above. Wonder if Quarantine has anything to do with it.
And Jim Benning is doing a press conference at 12:30pm in regards to Ferland. |

the issue from the start was that the NHL had said to everyone, that once phase 3 starts, everything was going to be disclosed by the NHL. They are going to be super vague about everything I imagine. |

Jared Bednar says Colin Wilson is "not fit to play" right now. That's really all coaches/management can say about players that aren't on the ice right now, per new protocol agreements with NHLPA
prepare for the rumors on everybody. |
