I wanted to hate on Sully not getting a nod, but all 3 guys are deserving. Cassidy coached the best record, Torts navigated a ton of injuries and defections that had them left for dead a couple times, and AV completely overhauled their style and had the Flyers humming by the break despite losing 2 key forwards.
I'm obviously not watching either, but from I've read both have been solid. Murray had a little trouble early today glove side but corrected.
Hearing the same on Sid and Geno.
Yohe has been raving about Marino. Says he looks like he found another level and Bourque supposedly agrees with him which big if true. - Tojo.
I've been watching some of these games from earlier in the season and Marino is even more impressive than I thought. Like Yohe said, there's more offense in his game. What impresses me the most is his Dzone play. Very calm under pressure.

You gotta be lucky to be good and you gotta be good to be lucky. We keep hitting on little things that keep propping our Cup window open. It'd be really cool if we could manage to contend all the way up to Sid and Geno's retirement and avoid fizzling out.
Not surprised. Even taking the professional athlete part out of the equation, I wouldn't want to live in an economy hotel if I planned on being there for 2 months.

nominated, yes. but not when Sully didn't. They did the exact same thing, but torts had less injuries, to less star power and it resulted in a worse record. Which in a normal season, would have resulted out of a playoff spot.

Very confident skater, deceptive. Head on a swivel in D zone. Someone in this post said earlier we may not be able to afford to keep him. I say nyet, he stays. Some how we gotta keep him. He is that good.

Torts also had less to begin with. And if you don't think that the injury to Seth Jones doesn't count as "star power", you're crazy. Not on the same level, but their 2nd best scorer from last year, Cam Atkinson, was injured the same day (and missed 12 games in mid Dec/mid Jan). Prior to their injuries, the Blue jackets were on a run of 19-2-5 and were in 3rd place in the Metro. After their injuries injury, they went 3-6-6 which dropped them out of the top-3.
Add to the fact that their top 3 scorers had 49, 42, and 41 points respectively, the fact that they lost Bobrovsky, Panarin, and Duchesne, and Josh Anderson going from 47 points last season to 4 points this season...yeah, I'd say Trots had a harder time this season than Sully and, prior to losing Jones and Atkinson, had the team doing much better than Pittsburgh.
If anything, Bruce Cassidy is who I'd put Sullivan ahead of. Not too hard to just roll out Bergeron-Pastrnak-Marchand every 3rd shift.
Not worried about the forwards, but I just don't feel confident about our defense going into the playoffs. They were giving up more goals and odd man breaks as the season wore on but the issue wasn't addressed at the trade deadline. They should have brought in an Ian Cole type of player, one who which you could count on to kill a big penalty or preserve a lead in the last minutes. There is no one on this defense I trust to do that!

I'm not sure if this is directed towards me, but I'm not sure who else so let me clarify.
They need to make sure with a flat cap that they have a plan to have the money in 2021 to sign Marino. Under no circumstances should they let him get away. They can absolutely afford him so long as they don't do something stupid this off-season to create a jam next off-season.

They tried to do that twice with Hunwick and Johnson. I think these failures illustrate exactly why you shouldn’t try to invest ~$3 mil on a #5 D who you think can jump up if injuries occur. End of the day, a bottom pairing D man is a bottom pairing D man and a defenseman that can reasonably play the second pairing is going to cost you at least $4 mil on the open market. The drop in effectiveness from a $3 mil bottom pairing d man to a $900k d man is not a whole ton, so when you sign these guys you end up tying a lot of needless money into a very replaceable player. GMs think they can sign a vet d for $2.5-3.5 mil to stabilize the bottom 4 and it almost never works.

I pretty clearly said "less star power". I mean i agree about Cassidy, but I will not "give" Torts bonuses for losing players. they would be 25 million above the cap if they had those players. thats not a legitimate team. Every team has to deal with the salarycap the same way.
Pens lost considerably more CapHit-games than the jackets and significantly more than anyone else. they finished off better than the jackets, and in a playoff spot. by comparison, i think sully did a better job than torts. which is why i think he should be in over him. Cassidy, while probably not deserving, is in for an entirely different reason, the best record, that is a different argument. but i agree with you on that.

When I said "star power" I'm talking about losing Seth Jones, a perennial Norris candidate and (to a lesser extent) Cam Atkison, who was second on their team in scoring. I assumed you meant injuries to star players. See how their record differed with and without them. If you're just talking about CBJ having "less star power" on their roster...then wouldn't it be easier for Sullivan to do well than Torts?

I do consider them star power, less star power than sid, geno, jake, horny, rust, letang, dumo, marino, shultz.
almost 1/3 of the Cap Hit lost by the jackets was from Dubinsky missing the whole season alone, who was playing 4th line for the last 3 years anyways.
If the Blue Jackets had less (considerably less) star power than the Penguins, then wouldn't that give Torts a much harder job than Sullivan, in which case Torts should be given more credit for what he did given his roster than Sullivan?
Man I remember when Dubinsky was the biggest villain in Penguins hockey by a country mile a few seasons ago. Haven’t thought about that guy in years now. Honestly forgot he was still in the league.

I remember RW legit wanting criminal charges filed against him for cross-checking Sid in the neck.

Yes, if he would have succeeded. But he did with them, what we would expect of them, not make the playoffs(by normal standards). and with the injuries, we still would have not changed those expectations. 6th in divison, 9th in conf. 14th in league(which is pretty incredible).
With the Penguins, the expections is 2-3 in the division, after those injuries, which was much more star power lost, you would expect them to fall out of the playoffs, or at least come close, but they are still 3rd in division, 5th in conf. 7th in league.

You know, I'm done with this, it's like screaming at a wall. Take care.
