Legitimately:
Leafs part ways with Kapanen, Kerfoot, Johnsson for picks.
Forwards:
Marner, Matthews, Nylander
Mikheyev, Tavares, Hyman
Robertson, Spezza, Engvall
Korshkov, Gauthier
Spezza signs for 700k, Gauthier signs for 700k, Mikheyev takes a modest raise to 1.25M
48,339,336 Mil Forwards
Defense:
Rielly, Pietrangelo
Muzzin, Dermott
Holl, Sandin
Lilegren Spare
Dermot takes a modest 1.25M, Pietrangelo signs for 9M
24,632,500 Mil Defense
Goalies:
Anderson, Campbell
6,650,000 Mil Goalies
1,200,000 Retained Salary (Kessel)
Total:
80,821,866 Mil - Players 20 - Cap Space (678,134)
This implies the leafs part with Kapanen, Kerfoot AND Johnsson for $0 coming back.
Alternatively: Send Lilegren back, bring up Marincin and Petan and have 21 on the Roster with still 91,467 of cap space remaining.
So. It's possible to sign Pietrangelo for 9M and leave the core un-touched. And not THAT much maneuvering required, but the Leafs would essentially be left with 2x First Lines and 2x 4th Lines. Defense looks arguably really good though. |

Alternatively, they don't sign Petrangelo:
Marner, Matthews, Nylander
Kapanen, Tavares, Hyman
Johnsson, Kerfoot, Mikheyev
Engvall, Spezza, Gauthier
Rielly, Muzzin
Dermott, Holl
Sandin, Lilegren (Kivihalme Spare)
21 Players, $553,134 under the cap, no (notable) subtractions from the team other than UFA Barrie and Ceci.
Forwards look scary, Defense looks like a cheese grater. |

math is off, total is just over 82, short a forward and very small roster |

Edited. The 1.2M retained was already included in the forwards, so you double counted (through my mislabeling).
Could swap some minor contracts around like I said to bring up Petan and Marincin instead of Lilegren and end up still below cap and have 12 forwards, 6 defense, 2 goalies (minimum required). There would be no extras with this lineup.
I don't think this is happening at all. But it is interesting that they can fit a 9M defenseman without sacrificing main core pieces. |

Ask any Senator or Maple Leaf fan. Cody Ceci is nothing more than a 6-7 D-man in the NHL. Any club that gives him anything north of 1M per year will regret it |

Just for fun I was experimenting with the Leafs Salary Cap on cap central awhile back. I wanted to see if the Leafs could keep Nylander and sign Pietrangelo.
I subtracted Kapanen, Johnsson, Kerfoot and Holl. Let Barrie, Clifford and Ceci walk. Promoted Robertson, Sandin and Liljegren. Added Lehtonen. Re-signed Spezza for league minimum.
Signed Joe Thornton for league minimum. Signed Pietrangelo to a hometown discount of 8 mil AAV. Gave Mikheyev and Dermott modest raises. Engvall, Gauthier and Korshkov were on the team.
And I still couldn't get the Leafs under $81.5 mil. Lowest I got was 83.5 mil. Maybe Dubas can do it, who knows? - gergeswillems

Defensive first system in which we're already overloaded with D-Men and D prospects. But yes Torrey Krug fits perfectly within the Isles plans. |

Realistically, the Leafs are gonna have to move someone free up cap space. You can't expect the organization to run smoothly with half a mil in cap space. Long term it's just not gonna work.

Ek said many of his sources have been saying this about Ceci. Not Vatanen. Not Brodie. Not Barrie. But if you miss out on Krug you focus on Ceci. Solid intel. |

Oh definitely that is not happening and it's not a good idea. Just consider it a thought experiment in "Could the Leafs add ANOTHER 9M player", and not another crazy Leaf fan saying this is definitely happening. |

Cody Ceci is only a consolation prize if he comes in at 1 million or less. He's not good(by NHL standards). No way he's worth top 4 money. Look up just about any article on this guy and it's fairly clear he drags down every partner he's put with. The only thing he has going for him is that he is a RD. If he's paid like a 6th-7th D, then fine. - foghornleghorn
exactamundo
cheap Ceci on show-me deal - maybe... but just maybe.
Ceci at anything north of 2M term tells him and Justin Holl that they value Ceci... which - to be polite - would be insane
