Is Lars Eller also an elite defender? Simple yes or no. Why is Kerfoot's contract a bargain, but Lars Eller (who helped win a big shiny trophy) is way overpaid in your exact words.

problem is: eller >> kerplunk.

I don't understand why you think its clever to repeat the right information in a dumb way that you know is wrong. How is that supposed to bother anyone or get them mad? You just look like you're being a troll.

Teams should definitely avoid paying out money to average players, and the rule of thumb is don't pay anyone who isn't at least potentially elite more than the league minimum.

Kerfoot is an elite defender, who was worth more wins that 65% of the NHL. He is therefore very much a bargain at $3.5 million.

- James_Tanner

The word "elite" and Kerfoot should never be used in the same sentence.

Unless that sentence is "Kerfoot is not elite"

I don't even mind the guy as much as some. But let's not pretend he is something that he is not.

Kerfoot is the definition of a mediocre NHL player. He’s neither elite or a bargain. Takes badly timed penalties too often as well. Terrible Take Tanner.

I agree providing evidence to dispute reputations - especially when specifically asked a question that directly talks about reputations, is crazy.

Doubling down with your ignorance (trolling) on "FanSided", Jimmy? Wouldn't it be easier just to actually WATCH the games?

"Using GAR - goals above replacement - which is the most respected way to measure defense, Kerfoot is better than 75% of the NHL at defense, and by far the Leafs best defensive player.

Hyman, while excellent at killing penalties, has terrible 5v5 defensive stats.

If you go to naturalstattrick.com and choose the Leafs and set the stats to relative, and make 500 5v5 minutes your minimum, Kerfoot is first on the Leafs in shots-attempts against allowed,

While Corsi will have the biggest sample size and be the most repeatable and reliable stats, you can go across all the various stats and see that Kerfoot is usually only ever bested by players who play 4th line minutes or superstars like Matthews and Nylander whose primary way to play defense is to have the puck.

As for killing penalties, in the NHL 5v5 defense comes from moving the puck out of your end. On the PK its far more about breaking up the play and playing a set strategy. There isn't as much cross over as you'd think between the best defensive forwards 5v5 and on the PK.

Hyman and Kerfoot are both examples of this.

You can believe whatever you want, but the evidence that Kerfoot is the Leafs best defensive forward is indisputable."

Mikheyev is a decent choice. Good young player that I'm glad we'll have back.

Kerfoot? He's not underrated, he just useless. He's not particularly good at anything. I had hopes he'd be a decent player for us, but he really let down my expectations, which weren't that high to start with.

And I'm not talking just offense. He's not good defensively at all. If he has any good numbers, it's probably because he's being sheltered/his teammates are covering for him and making him look good.

I would pick Zach Hyman. The team was not the same when Hyman was injured. He does all the things that don't end up on the score sheet. His game has developed to the point that they could let JVR go and avoid that huge cost of resigning JVR. They have not missed JVR because of Zach's production.

The problem being that they most likely will lose Zach because of the flat cap. I believe he will be the odd man out. He puts up points but it is what he does for his teammates that make him very valuable.

I'd trade Andreas if he has value in order to keep Zach Hyman in T.O....time will tell.

kerfoot took 14 minors last year. 6 more than the next most for forwards on the leafs.

kefoot got hit 110 times last year. 12th most in the nhl. constantly getting knocked off the puck in his zone.

kerfoot was on the ice for 43 goals for and 45 against.

if you ignore he's always taking dumb penalties, constantly giving the puck away in his zone and is on the ice for more goals against then for - then yes. I agree he is the best defensive forward.

William Nylander easily. The backlash over his contract looks hilarious now. Thank god Dubas didn't listen to the peanut crowd and move him asap for any random top 4 D.
- RogerRoeper

Nylander is in no way underrated.

He’s the most talked about leaf and he’s like their 6th best player.

It’s Andersen.

Those stats don't matter. The stats Tanner says are important prove that Kerfoot is like the best defensive forward on the team. In fact, he's ELITE defensively, so that justifies his $3.5M cap hit. You just don't get it. We should all just trust Tanner's assessment of who is and who isn't elite.

In February 2018, the Washington Capitals extended Lars Eller for $3.5M x 5 years. Tanner immediately called it a huge mistake. You don't waste money like that on replacement-type players. They should have just found a random guy to do the same job for $1M or less.

Four months later, Lars Eller lifted the Stanley Cup after putting up 18 points in 24 games. He played a shutdown role, killed penalties, blocked shots, and was versatile enough to step into the top 6 when injuries struck.

Good call Tanner.

But did you get meaningless, cherry picked WAR stats from natural fish sticks dot com? I wonder who Jimmy thinks is the most underrated player on the Canucks? Loui Eriksson? Jay Beagle?

Q: Hey Tanner. Who was the most underrated Canuck during their magical run to the Finals in 1994?

A: That's a trick question. They didn't have advanced stats back then. That's like asking if Ed "Robocop" Jovanovski was good or not. Impossible to tell. Like an unsolved mystery.

Nylander is always talked about badly. Andersen is overrated badly. He never gets blamed for crappy play and gets all the credit for every win. He's avery average goalie
