I admire Ed Snider very much for setting the tone, personally and institutionally, of the emotion involvement in being a Flyers fan, beyond the $ and beyond even the results. He is surely the greatest Philly sports owner ever. I don't think Connie Mack is relevant to the argument.

I will however nitpick about one thing. He was a lifelong conservative, which is irrelevant. He espoused the same Ayn Rand shtick that many successful business-people of earlier generations did, for example the Koch brothers. Ayn Rand is to the canon of philosophy what Archie Andrews comics is to literature, but again, that's also irrelevant.

I am talking about inviting Sarah Palin to drop the puck in 2008. It was because she was a "hockey mom" ostensibly, and we all know that's not true, but again, she was certainly a celebrity, and she did use the phrase "hockey mom from Alaska", and so Ed and the Flyers deserve the benefit of the doubt on their claim that the decision was apolitical.

But this is not about politics. Sarah Palin should not have been invited because by this time, it was evident that she was (and remains btw) a bona fide bimbo. Politics is one thing, sheer stupidity is quite another, and the aw shucks "its cool to be stupid" is simply dangerous, as tens of thousands of lost lives this year will provide proof of. She exemplified a specific trait of the modern Republican party that has increasingly lost its intellectual compass and not just panders, but actually cultivates, true dimwits.

By almost two to one, modern Republicans believe that higher education (college and beyond) is bad for the country. In a world that is increasingly dependent on valuing abstract thinking (global warming, cyber-security, vaccines, financial crimes, big data), this kind of perspective and this kind of thinking is personified by people like Palin and a few others, who previously set the trail blazed by the current dude at our helm, and it will end up destroying our country if it is not called out publicly and shamed.

For that one profound cause alone, that simple and singular gesture was deeply misguided. It's just one speck on his shining suit, but it is very much a speck and I personally think it is a significant one.

I had you at dimwit, eh, buddy?

Anyway, I said my piece. It stands.

But I am not going to argue further when hockey is around the corner.

Cheers.

Come on man. Just talk hockey then. You obviously posted what you posted to get a reaction. So now you play innocent when you receive a negative reaction?

No politics please. I am confident that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Great read Bill, thanks for that. Some good comments too. As I’ve said before, I think we’ve got a great shot at this, winning a Cup, looking forward to the weekend.

Dude get over it. Here’s some free advice. You, might not want to go around insulting others if that’s the type of point your looking to make. Wow!

Bill, or anyone. Will the first series “Play in” games that finish in a tie be decided by 3 on 3 and shootout, or 5 on 5 sudden death. I’m thinking that games going on with extra long overtime’s could cause scheduling problems.

Thank you for your "free advice"

I am not running for office now, and I don't plan to ever. So, your free advice, I am afraid, is worthless.

I have absolutely zero problems calling out stupidity for what it is. And I took pains to point out my reasoning in my post, which is different from just a political opinion.

And if you feel personally insulted by my comments, you could ignore them, or read a different, more flattering source.

After all, many people don't like what they see in the mirror, and choose convex ones, or even stop looking.

Pretty sure the play-in games will be 3v3 and shootout.

I'm still wondering what happens if the first game of the day in the first or second round goes to 3OT one day.

No, the conversation had turned to Snider's personal qualities. This was a personal quality. I believe it was relevant.

Sorry, btw, where am I crying foul again?

The fact that you went out of your way to state that it wasn't political tells me that it was. Why say it's not political at all if it wasn't.

Seriously man just move on to something else today. You took your shot and you missed terribly.

I was wrong.

Remaining play for the Eastern Conference will be hosted in Toronto and will be fought between the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers.

Based on performance, these teams will then be seeded into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which will be played with standard overtime and shoot-out rules.

However, there will also be best-of-5 Eastern Conference qualifying rounds played between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers, New York Islanders and Florida Panthers, and Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets. These teams will compete under playoff overtime rules.

My bad.

We watch Hockey and other sports to get away from politics, so I guess you didn't get that memo? Hopefully HB sticks to sports and not political BS? Enjoy the 2020 playoffs and Sarah Palin sends her regards...

Yeah, not about politics at all. You know what you did, and why you did it.
