The NHL's rule on not-disclaiming injuries ect is very stupid anyway it just leads to speculation I don't understand it. - M. Arachide
I don't think there is a perfect way to handle it.
You have to be careful because there are guys like Steve Simmons who go complete witch hunt mode with this thing. |

Ok, the thing is; you started your paragraph with "Everybody makes their own choices. Everybody has their own morals. Everybody has their own ethics". You then go on to say that Simmons has chosen poorly...based on whose ethics? According to his own, he did not choose poorly. According to yours, yes. - Good On Paper

Sigh. I agree, Pat. It should come with a certain set of ethical standards. However, if we're being realistic, this standard is probably not followed by a large portion of the media. As a person in our society, he did chose poorly. As a journalist, his thinking probably was "Oh man, hottake! Better be the first to put this out.". He probably didn't think it was that big a deal since other players admitted having covid. As a regular person, it wasn't his call to make, obviously. As a journalist, his priorities were elsewhere. - Good On Paper
as a regular person OR as a journalist, it was a mistake. good journalists are usually the ones that manage to gain people's trust. perhaps in Simmons' mind it was the right move to do for his career, but to me it's quite the opposite.

What's a "good" journalist? Who gets to decide that definition? Simmons' bosses obviously think he's a good journalist. He probably got a poopload of hits for that story. The point is, arguing whether he made a poor choice or not is useless, as almost everyone will have an opinion on this, based on their own morals/position. |

I worked as a journalist / editor and taught journalism at university for a few years before I got out of the industry.
Here is the deal, with the rise of the internet, people believed that there would be more freedom of press as they were not beholden to corporations / advertising, thus allowing them to write stories without interference.
But what happened was sort of the opposite - advertisers had sort of held journalists / newspapers accountable to their ethics or they would pull out. With a significant amount of less worry of losing advertising revenue (so much cheaper to publish the news on the internet), one of the levers of accountability has been removed.
This shift to web content created introduction (and perfection) of advertisers to micro target their ads to specific content and specific users, these low-cost internet sites will have some level of advertising regardless of the content a journalist puts out there. We could look at the same web page and be served different ads because google and the like know more about us than our own family.
And now we have regular newspapers struggling to survive, they are being as careless toward ethical and journalism standards to get hits, as they can also get some of that micro targeted ad revenue (which they now rely upon more and more than traditional advertising).
This applies to all forms of journalism - political, entertainment and sports.

so I guess we can't define what makes a good teacher, policeman, doctor, etc. either..?? TMZ still exists in the media, and they get tons of hits, doesn't mean they're not full of poop

Exactly. It's unfortunate, but such is the reality of the industry.

On a holiday Monday in Canada, the NHL should have scheduled Pittsburgh-Montreal at 3 pm and Edmonton-Chicago at 8 EST. That way you'd have Crosby going into McDavid and you won't have to fight to stay awake to watch the Oilers-Blackhawks game. |

I'd still rather Columbus have a shot at #1 than the Leafs.
After this round, the Leafs can go (frank) themselves. |
