so I guess we can't define what makes a good teacher, policeman, doctor, etc. either..?? TMZ still exists in the media, and they get tons of hits, doesn't mean they're not full of poop - Pat1993
1- Huh? Not the same thing.
2- You're missing the point, man. TMZ is full of poop but they're successful because they don't give a poop. |

I'd still rather Columbus have a shot at #1 than the Leafs.
After this round, the Leafs can go (frank) themselves. - Mashadar
Dubois-Lafrenière would be a nasty duo

1- why would it be different? we should be able to establish conventions in journalism just as in any other profession.
2-I don't think I'm missing the point, you were saying Simmons did it because it would get hits, and he shared it because he didn't give a poop, kinda like TMZ does, so... |

There are standards.
Rarely is anyone being held accountable, unless they work for a company like CBC. |

There's that key word again.
I think we agree, Pat. What I'm saying is you think he did something wrong because of your own ethics, but he doesn't feel the same because of his job and knowing that there would not have been any consequences. If it were truly unacceptable what he did, he would no longer have a job. |

I guess this is where we disagree then. in my mind the fact that he still has a job and that his boss is probably on his side doesn't make it more acceptable. |

I don't agree with it! It's acceptable in the industry, not to me. |

I guess I misinterpreted what you were saying when you said "what's a "good" journalist? Who gets to decide that definition? "...

There will never be unbiased journalism. Partially on purpose, mostly because you cannot always get (or have made available) all points of view. We often have this view that there are 2 sides to a story, but in reality it is often much more complex than that. However, detailed journalism is dead, mostly because people want quick points 2 paragraph stories, not long articles.
We also now live in a world where people present their opinion as facts, rather than facts being facts. And for some reason, journalist are not calling these people out, just reporting on what they said - across the spectrum of political / social ideology.
And finally, most reporting has now devolved into opinion columns, which people now consider fact based journalism because they are not media educated enough to understand the difference (and the traditional role of opinion pieces).
That being said, there exists standards and rules that are meant to hold people accountable for crossing the line, lying, or general misdirection to make their point. Like I said, rarely being applied.

If Matthews was a real pro he would have had his agent or lawyer give money to Simmons to make it disappear before it came out. |

Not much, really. Burning frequently because no AC, and there was a leak upstairs that isn't really good, the landlord is coming in 45 minutes to check it. |

Don't have one.
I have a fan, so that's something, but it's still just blowing air.
And well, sometimes I have to go outside for groceries, papers, etc... |

well said. objectivity should be something we aim for, even if we never truly reach it.
it's a sad state of affairs in the world of news and journalism considering all the naive and stupid people out there, but oh well... |
