If he said "lose assets", it would be a slam dunk. He didn't. Saying " 'I didn't want to come to a team and feel like they have to subtract what they had' leaves it open to concerns about cap issues. A reasonable concern considering the big names coming due for a raise. Sounds like a guy who wants to win a cup.

That sounds like JT controlled who made deadline offers for him. I mean, how else could he keep Toronto from making an offer that "subtracts assets"? JT had no control over that. Snow TOLD Tavares he wouldn't be traded, not the other way around.

The only control JT had was picking from the offers he had after the Isles signing period passed. So, he went with the team that gave him the best chance to win. If the Leafs weren't going to be able to re-sign Nylander or Marner because they spent too much on JT, maybe he takes one of the other offers.

Not debatable?? Do you have a God complex? Yours isn't the only valid opinion. Tavares had other offers in hand when he met the Leafs. I'm open minded enough to consider he wanted to sign with a team that could afford him without shedding talent. This is definitely a reasonable concern considering the pending contract situation in Toronto.
