I know this is tinfoil hat time, but maybe this is sort of a soft tank. Sort of checks all the boxes:

Shot at possible top 3 pick knowing one of the q round losers will get one.

Doesn't risk potential long term injury to your goalie of the future, easy to justify sitting him

Hank gets to go out on his own shield so to speak if this is it for him.

I don't think the Rangers are purposely trying to lose by any stretch, but this is a year where it's no big deal so to speak if they do.

Only reason they were down by a goal, could have easily been down by three.
