Good to build on. Second line is concerning. 3rd is gonna be dismantled - Thorny87
If we get through the Habs, I'm really worried about that 3rd line. They got nothing. Nothing. |

Good gawd. Making this too difficult against this scrub team. Nice game from Murray. - madmike71
Murray is the reason they won this game. Plain and simple. |

He made some big saves. Especially after only facing a handful of shots. Nice to see. - Thorny87
Pens really did a great job of blocking shots and protecting him. When things got a little hairy, he did the job. That was really the secret of the two cup wins. Solid team defense and tending when they needed it. |

Tonight was the best Murray has looked in some time, IMO. Calm cool collected and made the saves when they mattered. |

I thought
1 was good. Sid is easily our best player right now. Props to Sheary on that 2nd goal.
2 is off. Geno is supposed to dominate. WTF?
3 is a bunch of guys that should all be playing another position?
4 is 4. I’d love to see them bury something but they don’t (frank) up. |

Veteran win for the Pens. Facing a red hot goalie and didn’t panic just kept the pressure on. |

Gotta agree with all of this. Credit where it’s due, murray had some shakes but he also had some big saves. Overall, good team defense. Dumo had a couple of worrisome missteps but I don’t think that’s a big picture concern.
Malkin was not good. The powerplay right now is the difference obviously. In a game like this you convert one or two and the end result looks like a blowout. Going 0 for 5, 6 will continue to make the margin for error razor thin

100%. This is a team that isn’t built to win a 1 goal game.
Forgot MM He was great when called upon. |

They actually out shot us 5v5. We had chances but couldn't buy anything. Outstanding job from the PK. |

Glancing at the stats, the Pens 3rd line did not allow a shot or scoring chance against. Didn't threaten a ton although Marleau came close, but a much better performance I thought than last game where they were just caved in every shift. |

This PP is going to kneecap them if they move on. I don't see how they get through some of these other great teams with that mess. |

Marleau with 9mins. McCaan with 12.5 and Hornie with 15 mins. They didn't get rolled like the 1st game. It's a start I guess. |

Hornies was all PP minutes
McCann is a black hole, Marleau has more to offer but not on that line
Does Marleau only play wing on the same side as Jake/Zucker?
On paper there's all this depth but it only seems like it's for injury. Marleau/Hornie can slot into the top 6, but combined they don't equal an effective line |

Honesty they haven't played all that much together. McCann needs to step up and that line can produce. They played good shutdown tonight but they need to push for some offense. Marleau almost scored tonight too, that was basically the lines only real chance. |

I'd give anything to have Bones and Hags back. - madmike71
We've been trying to replace Bones for 3 seasons now
Whats wrong with 18-20 goals and 35-40 points from your 3C again, who can also kill and defend??

Nothing is wrong with that. He just got paid and we couldn't match. Im pretty sure we offered him a 3 year contract but he went to Nashville for the 4 year more money and term. |

The 4th year was the sticking point, and assuming we gave it to him we'd have Bones instead of Bjugstad next year at about the same money
We'd also still have a bunch of players and picks that we moved around trying to find a 3C and we'd have had Bones for the past 3 seasons |
|

Let McCain ait a game for Lafferty. Even let Marleau play centre to ease McCains work load |

Different cap issues then. We still had Kessel. We were so close to the cap they had to get Brassard in some bizzar trade just to get the cap hit low enough. So it just wasn't going to work at that time. Sure now we could do his cap hit but it wasn't able to happen at that point. |

Couldn't match the contract. I forget all the cap stuff and who we had to pay, but at the time nobody could blame JR for letting him walk. You're right, they've been searching for a replacement ever since.

I think JR could have made it work if he wanted to. I understood the logic at the time - Bonino was probably about to enter the downside of his career and his linemates, prime Kessel and Hags (for the most part) on a world-beater team, might have been propping him up a bit. I think the Brassard debacle really set this team back, but again, I don't blame JR for pursuing him - it just didn't turn out well. |

I think we could have just not signed Hunwick (who we had to give Sheary away just to get rid of, and then give away Kahun to reaquire - good gawd) and we'd have been fine |

Yeah, there's a lot of those overpayments that add up (Hunwick, JJ, Tanev) that can mean the difference between retaining a good player or not. Of course, a lot of this relates back to the Pens' lack of defensive prospects that can be adequate or better 3rd pairing for cheap. Speaking of which, I'm excited to see how POJ progresses and hopefully supplants you know who. |
