the time to trade Nylander was before his holdout.
now everyone knows he sucks defensively, and he only gets points because of the other players carrying him.
sure, his trade value is a bit higher than after last season which was a car-wreck.
but still, nobody is now willing to give up a decent D-man with upside - since Nylander isn't a 'project' anymore - it's clear to every GM in the league what he brings (PP expert that is very one-dimensional and a big liability in his own end). |

So trade him with worse stats and his contract coming up? That's a terrible idea. You simply would not get cose to value for him you would now.
Nylander just turned 24, scored 31 goals in 70 games and was on a 82 point pace with the new coach. He can be a 80-90 point forward. teams will jump at that.
LOL @ the idea his "Defensive" reputation means teams won't want him. That's moronic. He's a1st line winger signed through his prime AND almost all his actual cash is paid on his deal (Very important after COPVID) |

Here's why I think Columbus looked so much worse in 2nd round: NHL schedule. They had way too much time off after a sweep and lost all momentum. That's often worse than going 7 games. It happened to Vegas in the finals the year prior. Not scientific answer and no stats involved, but it's death for teams.
That's why 93 Leafs did so well. They played every 2nd night. - RogerRoeper
The '93 Leafs. Very good hard working, resilient team. Bad memories for me. 😠|

my suggestion was to trade him at 2018 draft after 2 61 point seasons.
that was the time he was on his top value ever. he's never going to come close to that value-wise. |

Bullpoop. His contract was coming-up that takes away his value. He is now signed through his prime and has much better stats. You are wrong.
Have you noticed teams don't trade talented 1st liners at that age other than maybe Chiarelli? |

Ok but he wasnt traded. So move on.
Hes a 60 - 75pt player making what a 60 - 75pt player should make.
He wont be difficult to trade if need be.
Unless the leafs get bounced by cbus, i doubt any of the big 4 are moved |

Leaf fans think they are smarter than Dubas and would trade all our early 20's talent. No other team does that, and the very rare time they do it's a disaster, but Dubas is an idiot for not trading them... |

Too early to trade him.
It had only been 2 years of nhl play.

I suggested the Leafs trade Nylander for a top 4 defenseman after they signed Tavares but that didn't go over too well. - gergeswillems
It was too soon. They would have been selling low at that point. |

But people everywhere act like their flaws are bigger than every other team. The cap discussion alone proves this. Leafs without a doubt are the #1 choice for "Cap Hell". And it's funny, they were deemed in "Cap hell" once they had Nylander/Matthews/marner all playing in 2016-17. No one is doing that for teams like the Canucks or Rangers. - RogerRoeper
Your problem is that we all know that the Leafs are probably the most hated team and we are in everyone's top few list of hated fanbases.
You have to view opinions or comments about the Leafs through that lens.

Yes but people don't get that. No doubt they'd be selling low UNLESS they traded him this offseason. |

Maybe. But I recall thinking that the Leafs essentially got a franchise player for free in Tavares. As in not giving up any assets to acquire him. Just alot of Cap space.
I thought the Leafs were playing with house money. So I expected Nylander to be traded within the following week. For a Hamilton or Pesce. Or whoever. Not give him away for any defenseman.
Anyway it doesn't really matter now. It's clear Dubas isn't trading Nylander. |

By December of 2018 you wanted to throw him overboard for nothing. You doubled-downed (often) on your opinion that he was "negative" value.
Willie's a nifty mitts top line winger that plays the game in a way that many of us don't love. He's an elite offensive player with decent defensive numbers.
I like my wingers to have some tenacity and bang-bang to their game but the constant narrative of how Willie sucks is exhaustively incorrect.
I like his value but I'd deal him for a very good young dman on a good contract. Problem is that those may not exist. Pesce might be one but I'm not sure Carolina would trade him anymore. At 4 milly he's super-value. |
