"Uh, Trade Nylander for a top 4 D, Dubas is stooopid".
Do people not see Dubas was right not trading him? His value is much higher now.
If Dubas traded him for someone like Montour and Nylander scored 31 goals in only 70 games he's be getting crapped on for that. - RogerRoeper
Dubas and Shanahan had to take time to see where the team was in a few areas and what they should expect from the farm going forward.
The playoffs this season, or perhaps a lack of playoffs? for the Leafs should prompt them to start making changes.

Unless they win the cup, a must is getting a quality D partner for Rielly. Poor guy is carrying such crap the past 3 seasons. And it's not a big name "Stud D", just a quality partner. It will make a big difference.
I move move NIck Robertson in a nanosecond.

Yes but people don't get that. No doubt they'd be selling low UNLESS they traded him this offseason. - RogerRoeper
very much untrue.
at the time (around 2018 draft), I suggested that Leafs should trade Nylander for Matthew Tkachuk (after 48 and 49 point seasons) and most in here feld that Nylander should get more.
I think it's obvious now that Tkachuk is the better player - or at the very least what Tkachuk brings is something Leafs are missing right now. |

Calgary themselvves are not moving forward as a franchise.
And you feel Nylander's value is worse now after 31 goals, 59 points in 70 games?

Leaf fans think they are smarter than Dubas and would trade all our early 20's talent. No other team does that, and the very rare time they do it's a disaster, but Dubas is an idiot for not trading them... - RogerRoeper
You take statements and hyperbole them.
Nobody wants to trade ALL the talent.
We have a few posters who read a statement from a moron and then repeat it 1000’s of times until they actually believe it themselves. |

Ha ..I recall that too. Except the real version is that most on here said no way Calgary trades Tkachuk for Nylander. No way .....
Last summer there was discussion about Marner for Tkachuk. Most around here balked at that one. |

fine, I'll look it up. you might be right, but I'm quite sure that people said Tkachuk wasn't enough.
same for my point on Lehner being a similar goalie to Andersen

I agree ..only variable that might come in to play is that this Covid poop might mean another short/weird season for 20/21. A short off-season and weird season might make it better just to wait until next summer.
But I agree .. another first round exit ..and the Cap constraints ...likely mean that some changes are coming. |

Well Andersen does need to be traded this offseason and Lehner signed. Lehner has nice stats no doubt, but his lack of 60+ games means he won't get a contract bigger than Andersen now. |

By December of 2018 you wanted to throw him overboard for nothing. You doubled-downed (often) on your opinion that he was "negative" value.
Willie's a nifty mitts top line winger that plays the game in a way that many of us don't love. He's an elite offensive player with decent defensive numbers.
I like my wingers to have some tenacity and bang-bang to their game but the constant narrative of how Willie sucks is exhaustively incorrect.
I like his value but I'd deal him for a very good young dman on a good contract. Problem is that those may not exist. Pesce might be one but I'm not sure Carolina would trade him anymore. At 4 milly he's super-value. - The Law
I am not against trading him either, but i just dont see any real deals out there.
Maybe after this playoff thing is over and the cap comes into play there will be some viable options.

I was informed yesterday that we do not need to make a trade for a top 4 defenseman, because many will be available at the NHL defenseman store in November, and they will all be willing to play in Toronto for a fraction of their value.
So eat it, Gerges.
Eat it hard. - Atomic Wedgie
I hope you're not referring to me here, as my comment was clearly stating that I didn't believe the leafs had to trade Marner to address that issue. Because there were avenues, and yes, I did suggest free agency was one of them.
So I will just assume someone else said what you're stating here. Because it would be quite a dramatic over reach to state that what I said equated to that... And I don't see that being you. |

Tkachuk is a piece of sh!t and will probably get more than the 7.4 willie is paid
But he is the type of player the leafs need |

I do feel many players wil be available this offseason. what is missed about the talk of a "Flat cap", is the fact many NHL teams are in a bad place financially and actually will have to cut the budget a lot and can't eb anywhere near 81.5 as a cap after COVID. Apparently Coyotees are cutting budget big time for next season. Florida is another.
Leafs actually have great trade assets. |

We could easily deal Marner for a very good young dman that has a contract in same neighbourhood as Marner's.
Then hope that Robertson + new dman > Marner. |

I still think it's more likely that Kapanen and/or Johnsson are moved and that space is used to upgrade the D.
But, if that magic unicorn is out there (the young affordable partner for Rielly) then I wouldn't see Dubas having any hesitation moving Willie.
Mikheyev has shown enough and Robertson has the potential ..to work their way up the lineup. |
