2019.
6 pts, 7 games, -3
That is what a 70 pt. pace, against the Bruins second line. Can you even name who is pn their second line?
Is that production worthy of the most player-friendly contract in the league? - Aetherial
Also had 5 goals... |

They should’ve traded Ellis instead of the young, highly talented player they drafted 4th overall a few years earlier.
wait... - Steven_Seagull

I am pretty sure Ellis wasn't getting you Johansen at the time. Johansen was, for a while, considered one of the best young centers in the league.

So, does he make the players around him better?
Second line competition, 70 pt. pace for that kind of money walking him right to UFA.

Actually, yes; or at least not hard enough.
So can you. I pointed it out during the game. There was a huge difference watching the two teams battle last night. The compete level is not even close.
A pep talk by Torts means nothing if the team won't listen and buy in. - Aetherial
Hockey analysis is easy. I was more upset by defencemen who were slow making decisions when they were going back to get the puck. That gave more time to forecheckers. I don’t think Ceci can try harder to think faster but it’s a problem.
I thought Marner looked lost. I don’t know if that’s because he wasn’t interested or wasn’t trying. If he’s lost, that line is in trouble.
There’s a bunch of players who have to play better. Maybe it’s as simple as trying harder to be better. I’ll never know because I can’t operate at that level. Only Max can. |

(frank) off with the -3 statistic. As if +/- is ever a useful stat.
5 goals against a ferocious Bruins lineup is pretty damn good. Call me Krejci, but I can't remember who was on the Bruins second line two playoffs ago, but so what? He scored 5 goals which would be on pace for close to 60g in the regular season. |

They should have traded Jones for Nylander. That hair, with that jersey? |

Tough to tell anything from these round robin games. They are essentially pre-season games.

I happen to like +/-
Call me the anti-Tanner, but I find it funny that counting goals for and against is a terrible statistic, but counting shots for and against, and even shots attempted for and against ate "advanced statistics."
How can shots for and against be a better indicator of goals for and against than goals for and against? |

I see the flaws in the stat. I see flaws at least as bad in putting much stock in Corsi or Fenwick or whatever.
At the end of the day, we can all think Matthews was great because he scored 5 goals, playing predominantly against the second line... but he was on the ice for 8 ES goals against, and still only played at a 70 pt. pace. That is not even in the ballpark of what we should expect for that contract.
Leafs fans, just like the Leafs players, are really good at ignoring the fact that there are 2 ends to the ice.

I would trade Matthews for Jones.
Probably a bad mistake, but I think Matthews contract is terrifying.
No way in hell Marner fetches Jones.

Second most goals scored since entering the league...
Marner +24 (regular + Playoffs) vs Matthews +31 (regular + Playoffs)
Matthews > Marner defensively? 🤔 |
