He doesn't want to play wing. From what I understand he's being a bit of a baby about it.

Can you imagine being a top 6 NHL player and you won't switch positions? It's not like they're asking him to play D or in net.

Marky just joined a select club...

Only Canuck goalies with a playoff shutout are Brodeur McLean & Luongo.

Notice what all 3 of those had in common?

So the Rangers and Jets collectively now have a 25% chance at the first overall pick, it’s a complete joke imo the NHL somehow allowed some of the better teams to get the first overall pick.

Oilers 9th in league overall
Penguins 7th in league overall
Jets 15th in league overall
Rangers 16th in league overall
Predators 20th in league overall
Panthers 19th in league overall
Leafs 12th in league overall
Minnesota 21st in league overall

All have a shot at first overall, only Nashville & Minnesota should really be there, should they lose in the thingy

I thought they were playing in a thingy to get to the playoffs, so I don't believe these stats count as any sort of playoff stats.
Anyways, good on Markstrom for shutting the door in an important game.
Haven't had time to watch the game yet, but, sounds like the team is playing with a lot more physicality, which many of us were concerned about, good on them.

They (the NHL) consider these games “playoff” games for statistical purposes. It was covered in a (much) earlier blog but there was a lot of internal conflict going on then, so not surprising that this little detail got lost.

Agree. Best to worst match ups: Dallas, St Lou, Vegas, Colorado.
- NewYorkNuck

For some reason they play matchup well against the Blues. Don’t know what it is exactly, but I think taking on the champs right away is what this crew needs.

Hockey in summer feels a little weird, but the Leafs blowing a 3-0 lead in summer feels just as good as in the spring

Close only 3 Canuck goalies to play for the cup. Could it be an omen? ‘82 fairy tale lol
- Nighthawk

I don’t think any of those goalies got their first playoff shutout the same year they went to the final though. I mean, it’s possible I guess.

This has been something I've thought about but haven't spent any time researching so perhaps you might know?

Since the league decided to effectively end the season and start an expanded version of "playoffs," all the stats therein are counted as playoff stats.

What happens to regular season bonuses that weren't met due to a shortened season? Did the league/PA come to an agreement as to what happens to regular season bonuses?

Seems to me that counting these as playoff stats is a nice way to keep some costs down (cap and real dollar wise.) Not a huge windfall but nickels and dimes add up.

mine was more of a side note.

i do think it would be an embarassment for the league if the pens and oil win for example but teams like florida nyr and even winnipeg were outside the playoff picture so id be less upset. league standings vs the usual conference standings dont always do justice every year

I get that the historical records show a 75% series win rate for the winner for the winner of game 3.

However, I think the league has much more parity than it did 35-40 years ago. I still think the Pens will win, maybe the Oilers.

I think you can throw out the historical stats being predictive this year. The season has been a total anomaly so it's like comparing apples and apple pie.

That said... I've always taken note of that game three stat. It used to be much more "certain" a couple of decades ago. I've noticed a lot of those types of stats (that one and teams coming back from 3 -1) have bucked the trend the last 10-15 years.

Agreed. There's also no real home ice advantage except for last change, lineup etc.

I would imagine that the playoff schedule will also be condensed (has it been released?) so conditioning might be the biggest determining factor. Who knows?

I’m not sure to be honest. My gut tells me it was about making it “fair” for as many stakeholders as possible. If they counted the play-in round (best of 5) and the round robin thingy (3 games) there would be a disparity in the opportunity for one group of players over another, not to mention the seven teams who didn’t get to participate. I bet that it is a conversation they had prior to signing the extension however. One of those ex-Canuck Army guys, I forget who, is a master capologist, or Whitelie, who reads good...
