Those are some really good points there big guy. - Leafs43
what, you think i'm wrong?
my favorite part is that they have ZERO cap space to make this team better, and are going to lose players for nothing as a result.
you guys are (frank)ed, you have half your cap tied up in 4 players which is crippling the team from actually improving.
but sure......they're legit contenders. |

Also, while I know we aren't supposed to make snap decisions...you can't have Holl playing 28 minutes a night and it seems this team/coach/management has no faith in Barrie (probably rightfully so as he's essentially cost himself 3mil by just one year outside COL). |

clb isn't dominating the leafs physically - burn
you are right - other teams are dominating the Leafs mentally.
bunch of fortnite-loving adolescents that don't want to put in the true effort to win important games.
There is a true need for changes, starting with making some changes upfront.
Nylander and Johnsson should be the first ones to go.
Ceci and Barrie (horrible on that last goal against) should obviously not be back.
A guy like Borgman (traded away for peanuts) could have filled some of the Muzzin physicality. (yes, leafs d is this thin that an guy that played in AHL last season would be an upgrade over current D).
Dubas really has his work cut out for him this off-season - and the 'patience time' is over. |

2 coaches already.
and it was quite obvious to anybody that had actually watched Barrie play with Colorado, what he brings to the ice (nothing that Leafs ever needed).

the thing is, if they need to any player can be moved. What Toronto has done a very good job with is not signing poop players to garbage contracts that cant be moved.
If the right deal comes along, I have no doubt they shake things up...of course thats if they lose to cbj
the narrative can change game to game |

even if they beat CBJ, they aren't getting past whichever team they play in the next round.
as for moving deals, let's be honest they only ones they can move that would have any impact on the cap is one of the 4 forwards.......
they obviously aren't moving Matthews, no point in discussing it.
i'm sure teams would line up to take Marner or Tavares, but there is no way you're moving that much cap for a single player without retaining salary or taking a big contract back, so it doesn't really solve the problem.
obviously Nylander is the choice, but that still leaves you with nearly 35 mil tied up in 3 players. I don't think a team can contend in a cap system with 3 players eating up nearly 43% of your cap space.....not to mention the obvious big raise Rielly is going to get (easily going to be an 8-9 mil dman)
Dubas being completely unable to negotiate team friendly deals with ANYBODY is what's sunk this team. |

it's okay, it will all be over tonight |

Keep:
Marner
Tavares
Hyman
Matthews
Mikheyev
Kapanen
Robertson
Gauthier
Engvall
Korshkov
Barabanov (I guess)
Maybe:
Kerfoot
Trade / not resign:
Nylander
Johnsson
Spezza
Clifford
rest
on D:
keep:
Rielly
Maybe:
Holl
Dermott
Sandin
Liljegren
Muzzin
Lehtonen (I guess)
trade / don't resign:
Ceci
Barrie
rest
Goal:
keep:
Woll
maybe:
Campbell
trade / don't resign:
Andersen
rest
biggest needs keep being after 24+ months solid defensive d-men, a proper #3C, and a winger that can bring some physicallity to the top 2 lines and PP.

it's clear that 8pm games don't work for the Leafs.

you're right, they can move any player, but either they'll never get equal value on the return, or it won't clear up enough cap space to matter.
this team is going to swim in the pool of mediocrity for years.......will never be bad enough to tank, but will never be good enough to contend. |

I think this is essentially true. Plus, Dubashas been very clever in the way he has front end loaded bonus payments. It means another team can do a deal that has much lower actual cash pay out on the back end of the contract. This is going to make some players especially attractive to other teams.
However, there will be at least 10 teams needing to shed salary because of the cap. There are teams in worse shape than the Leafs (eg., Tampa, St Louis) because they need to sign significant UFA or RFA players without the cap space to do it. There are about 10 teams in the middle that can make minor adjustments to stay within the cap.
And there are another 10 teams that have created huge cap space and built up draft picks with a view to doing deals and preparing for the leverage opportunities that will come from the protection lists out of the Seattle draft.
So, I think you are right in the sense that Dubas should be able to move players. On the other hand, he may have to discount the price in order to move a specific contract. I think Dubas can get a mid to late first round pick for Nylander or Marner. Nylander might be easier to move because most teams will be scared off by the negative vibes Marner's $11m cap hit causes for their own team's salary structure.
