I'll bite.
Which teams are going to have to save cash and sell players ...presumably on the cheap?
And if that's going to be a meaningful thing this offseason then doesn't that de-value all players on the trade market? Meaning trading a WN would be a bad idea right now. - The Law
I have no idea which teams, but based on reports Florida and Arizona are in deep trouble. They will not be able to have close to the same payroll. Likely a few more, but it's specualtive.
I'm surprised people are assuming after COVID everyone can afford the same payroll. Arizona has 0 cap. I can't imaginbe how much they've lost. THey will cut guaranteed.
And BTW, I never said these players would be moved "On the cheap", just that the idea Leafs are in the worst cap hell is ridiculous. |

Theres about 5 or so teams in the leafs situation.
Sure other teams may need to trim a little fat, but the lesfs have a D issue, it needs to be addressed.
Holl played way too much last night
Its gonna be tough
But we'll see - Fakepartofme
Assuming teams want/need to re-sign their good young RFA's their really are about 15 teams in the same situation. There won't be a lot of money spent on 2/3 liners and depth defensemen. I think the 'elite' guys on long term deals will still get paid. AP for example will find his money. Dubois and Barzal will get paid or sign short term like Tkachuk and Point.
Ya, I wonder if he considers 7 D tonight. Fresh legs like Sandin's could look pretty good and help keep the other D fresh.
I'd sit Spezza. He's not getting a lot of 5v5 minutes and his PP time can slide to Robertson or Mikky. |

Ok, so in your opinion it's about cap space. So every player earning more than 9/10 million per year is worth a mid to late first, gotcha. - The Law
No it is about market structure. There are not many teams ready to take on an $11 long term cap hit in the current budget situation. All the teams that have cap space and could do a deal are rebuilding teams loaded with picks and prospects. New Jersey, for example, just moved Taylor Hall at the deadline. Do you really think they would offer up a mid range first round pick for Marner and his $11m cap hit?

Marner is entering his prime years. Hall is 29 and already looks to be regressing. Taylor Hall made a dumb move not accepting their deal. I have read no reports they moved Hall because they didn't want him or couldn't afford him.
Would anyone take Hall over Marner? 7 years in age is a huge difference. |

Complete bullpoop. And there's teams that need to move players that can't because they can't trade them. Leaf are simply not in that position. AND again, we don't even know who will cut payroll. You think every team has the $$$ to stay at the same cap # after this mess? - RogerRoeper
Roger, Do you feel as strongly about this, As you do about the Leafs sweeping the Jackets?

100% wrong and I own it.
Now will you be fair and give me credit for the Habs over Pens in 5 pick if it happens? |

Yes. They do. They have 0 contracts they can';t move. Majority of NHl teams are also at the cap max.
And they 4 contracst only kicked-in this year yet they had even better statistical depth. It's not that at all. - RogerRoeper
how can both these be true? |

Huh? You can be at the cap max with contracts you can easily move. Most teams near the cap have 3-5 deals they can't move. |

Seriously?
So you've doubled down and yes, you are saying that all of those guys earning big dollars are worth a low first round pick, at best.
Or is it just MM? Eichel, Panarin, Rantanen all in the same boat? |

the thing is, Columbus did not compete all game and they won
looking from only one side of things is strange - senstroll
They competed, they just were getting outplayed by the leafs and had some bad bounces (goal off jones).
Leafs were great the 1st period.
Columbus stepped up in the 3rd and the leafs had no answer. |

the thing is, if they need to any player can be moved. What Toronto has done a very good job with is not signing poop players to garbage contracts that cant be moved.
If the right deal comes along, I have no doubt they shake things up...of course thats if they lose to cbj
the narrative can change game to game - senstroll
This is all true pretty much. I point out 1 issue with ‘any player’ like it or not whale contracts devalue a player. It’s not so simple & straightforward for any team to fit in those contracts. The few teams with space are not contenders making putting in the drivers seat in a buyers market with the flat cap. |

Anderson starting Back 2 back tonight?
4 periods of hockey last night makes me think they may go to Campbell.

I agree. But Covid came along and suddenly a team like New Jersey is loving their three first round picks and showing no interest in moving picks or prospects.
It is the market that is skewed. Tampa, is in worse cap shape than the Leafs. They have no money to sign Cerelli or Serachev. Either of those players are much easier to move than Marner in this market.
So, if your New Jersey do you give up a mid range 1st round pick for Cerelli and sign him for $4.5m over 5 years? Absolutely.
Now what would you expect New Jersey to offer up for Marner at $11m? They pass.

Leaf don't have to move Marner or Nylander though. they have other options.

apart from Edmonton, basically all teams in this league would be happy to make the required changes to build their fw roster around Marner |

My issue is more how his team handled the negotiations than his cap hit. He really needs to step-up. Remember all that bullpoop distractions over it? His agent commenting on Matthews' deal? |

its just an odd way to look at game...I get it..we are leaf fans
in the 1st it was 17-5 Leafs in scoring chances and 7-1 in high danger.
but we still say Columbus competed.
If that was the other way, we would say the Leafs did not compete.
the 3rd was not nearly as lopsided, in regards to scoring chances (7-9 and 2-3) |
