probably la too.
the winds are blowing to california on a marner trade. - Tumbleweed
SJ is going to be in the poop for the next long while with their wrong side of 30 defensive core that takes up a ton of cap space. |

Mitch Marner is not a cap dump. NOt even close.
94 points last season. on pace in a bad year for 90 points... Better numbers than Rantanen. |

Getting a 22 year-old who scores 90+ points already is not "Helping" the other team...
Now you're underrating Marner.
Again, Leaf players don't have less value than any other teams' players... He's not Sergei Bobrovsky LOL - RogerRoeper
i'm not underrating Marner, he's a great player....but teams know the position the leafs are in, and Dubas has shown that he's isn't good at a negotiating table. taking Marner helps whoever is getting him, but nobody can take that deal on, and as good as he is Marner isn't an 11 million dollar player.
if i'm a team looking for a good player from a cap strapped team, i'd rather have Point, Cirelli, Oshie, Wilson, etc. There will be a lot of guys available, who might not be quite as good as marner, but who cost probably half as much. |

Again, that only works if only 1 team is interested. And again, majority of the NHL is right where the Leafs are.
Mitch Marner won't have only 1 team interested. Not even close. It'll be a bidding war not 1 team offering scraps like your fantasy. |

nobody is suggesting that he's a cap dump, they're saying that no team can take on an 11 million dollar a year contract in a time where the cap is likely to remain close to fixed for the next few years. |

I agree. But Covid came along and suddenly a team like New Jersey is loving their three first round picks and showing no interest in moving picks or prospects.
It is the market that is skewed. Tampa, is in worse cap shape than the Leafs. They have no money to sign Cerelli or Serachev. Either of those players are much easier to move than Marner in this market.
So, if your New Jersey do you give up a mid range 1st round pick for Cerelli and sign him for $4.5m over 5 years? Absolutely.
Now what would you expect New Jersey to offer up for Marner at $11m? They pass. - spatso

so if the majority of the NHL is in the same position as the leafs, you're saying that there will be a lot of sellers and not a lot of buyers..........so why would a team take a player at 11 million, when they could get a similar player for significantly less? |

Every team in the league could take it on if they wanted to, it's a matter of how they decide to distribute their cap.
Someone said Anaheim. Silfverberg (5.25), Manson (4.1), Larsson (1.2) for Marner and a prospect.
If a team decides to structure their cap that way, its not hard... |

The list of competitive teams that aren't in the "leafs position" is very very short. Everybody is going to be juggling the Cap for the next 18 months. |

Yep. it's the same story., People only look at 3 or 4 contracts. It's actually very easy to get to 11 million. Lots of 3rd and 4th line waste on almost every team in the NHL.
Fans never even bother to look at those supporting players. |

will they? you think teams will line up for a 60pt player, who plays an INCREDIBLY soft game, and who makes 7 million a year?
again, there are players who are just as good or better, who make less or comparable money.
you said it yourself, it's going to be a buyers market, so why would teams lineup and overpay for Nylander, when they could call Tampa or Vegas, or a slew of other teams who are going to have to sell off players to remain cap compliant. |

so then where does the cap space come from to fill the 3-4 roster spots the team moved to take on Marner?
you're completely incapable of seeing how difficult it would be for a team to take on 11 million of cap for ONE PLAYER. |

This is a joke, right? Majority of his actual salary is paid. Those struggling financial teams will line-up to get a hold of a 24 year-old who just had 31 goals, 59 points in 70 games.
Once Keefe took over and Nylander got the proper TOI he was on a 82 point pace.
I can't take anyone seriously who has a fantasy William NYlander can't be moved at 6.9 through his prime and with little salary left.
Only on the Leafs... |

Initially my reaction was that I was glad Kadri nixed the Flames deal, I saw Jank as a huge downgrade to Kadri and the Leafs had no replacement.
Once I heard the Col deal I was liked it much better, Kerfoot is closer to Kadri/3rd line C and Barrie was a decent upgrade on what the Leafs had as RHD at the time (almost nothing)
Seeing how Barrie plays D, well its not great and cost the team the game last night imo. - senstroll
Was that Reilly caught on the 2 on 1? |
