sample size. - MaximusAurelius
So then just what are you basing your original statement on?
Babcock got more out of Marner than Keefe did, but Marner scored more points under Keefe, but it doesn't count because the sample size is too small?
You're like franking Donald Trump - say something stupid, and then rather than admit you are wrong, just keep digging the hole bigger and deeper. |

Dude, these players on teams like Florida don't get any criticisms and no one ever cares if they ever sniff the playoffs. Things like that never happen in Toronto. I have seen a lot of players in small markets get hyped and they get exposed in big hockey markets.
Barkov and Ekblad fail to get their team over the hump. - RogerRoeper
Panthers are a disaster of an organization with incredible financial constraints.
it's one of the only teams not spending up to the cap.
Cannot really judge Barkov, Ekblad, Huberdeau on lack of playoff participation - I'd say that most of their lack of success it to blame on the fact that the organization spends 10-15% less on players (cap and real salary) than 27-28 other teams in the NHL. |

That's horsepoop andyou know it.
The Hawks were skewered for their huge contracts. The same for the Parise/Suter deals.
The Doughty contract was pointed at as being ridiculous as well.
Nylander's on a great contract. Matthews is perfectly fine. It's the Marner deal that's (frank)ing nuts. - BINGO!
It's a Milly too high. Aho only got 5 yrs walking him into F.A. That 6th year is bigger dollars. Rantanen at 9.25 ...Good arguments that MM should be between 9 - 10.
He was short changed on his rookie deal by about 4.8 Milly in bonuses ....I think he got it back as part of this deal (ie. 800k over 6 years). It was brought up throughout the negotiations. |

I've long told people those July 1st bonuses Leafs pay that people laugh at increase the trade value of their players. - RogerRoeper
Plays a huge role in this.
There are a lot of teams that barely look at cap hits...unless it’s to get their cap at the floor. |

Engvall been better then both, at least last night.
He’d be the better fit JMO of course. |

I’d keep Marner over Nylander regardless of the salary. - Garnie
Hmmm. I don't know, when it comes to who contributes what when big games are on the line... I'm really not seeing much of a difference. Starting to lump both into the supporting cast category.
At that point I keep Willie. Just because Marner = decent replacement winger and serviceable defenseman in a cap world. |

7million AAV for a floater and playoff ghost isn't a good contract. |

If Panthers are sucha disaster why do I have to hear every summer for the past 15 years they have amazing young talent and will be better "Next Year". These guys are gettinga free pass they would not in Toronto.
And if Florida has $$ troubles maybe don't blow your wad on a 6 million a year cocah and 10 million a year aging goalie...

If the Leafs trade Marner for a D it’s likely a much older D coming back.
Not sure any young D make sense right now.
Marner for Doughty makes sense. Not sure it’s worth trading a 22 year old for a 30 year old. Maybe if LA retains some salary? I don’t know.
Marner is probably not going anywhere. For a while at least. |

Marners not stupid, at that point he knows he chose dollars over being part of winning a cup for the hometown. He damn well new that number would put him in California, or something like that one day. |

matchups and short series like these can make some players look good and other bad.
he is not standing out like I thought he would. but if they manage to get by, that can change quickly

A floater who scored a decent chunk of his 31 goals from in front of the net.

At least Marner has the puck and tries to do something with it, did Willie play 5v5 last night? Last guy out of the ozone - 1st guy to blow the dzone and we wonder why we give up so many shots. |

All those players signed their contracts before they got to the level they are at today.
Don’t try to pretend that these players signed contracts when they were hart finalists. - Santo_44
Bergeron was an elite 1C
-annual Selke nominee
-2011 cup winner
Then signed 8/6.875 3yrs later
Marchand 8/6.125 6yrs after 2011 cup win
Bad precedent to back up the Brinks truck on only a hope. |

And with the state of this group and the place it wants to be, I'm not sure a young D is the answer anyways. This team could use some steady presences in lots of areas, guys who have learned. Not that are learning... |
